A case of subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord due to folic acid and copper deficiency.

Subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord (SACD) is a rare neurologic disorder manifesting progressive symptoms of paresthesia and spastic paralysis. Herein we present an autopsy case of SACD caused by folic acid and copper deficiency. A 16-year-old male presented with gradually worsening unsteady gait, and bladder and rectal dysfunction.

Projecting future costs to U.S. electric utility customers from power interruptions.

This analysis integrates regional models of power system reliability, output from atmosphere-ocean general circulation models, and results from the Interruption Cost Estimate (ICE) Calculator to project long-run costs to electric utility customers from power interruptions under different future severe weather and electricity system scenarios. We discuss the challenges when attempting to model long-run costs to utility customers including the use of imperfect metrics to measure severe weather. Despite these challenges, initial findings show that discounted cumulative customer costs, through the middle of the century, could range from $1.

Complications of Distal Radius Fractures Treated by Volar Locking Plate Fixation.

The current study investigated the incidence of complications after surgery for distal radial fractures. This multicenter retrospective study was conducted at 11 institutions. A total of 824 patients who had distal radius fractures that were treated surgically between January 2010 and August 2012 were identified.

Effects of intracerebroventricular administration of 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin in a patient with Niemann-Pick Type C disease.

Niemann-Pick Type C disease (NPC) is an autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder characterized by progressive neurological deterioration. Previously, we reported that intravenous administration of 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPB-CD) in two patients with NPC had only partial and transient beneficial effects on neurological function. The most likely reason for HPB-CD not significantly improving the neurological deficits of NPC is its inability to cross the blood-brain barrier.

Radiographic features of Kirner's deformity.

We conducted a study of Kirner's deformity to investigate its radiologic features and consider its possible causes. Sixty-seven patients with Kirner's deformity, 41 in our series and 26 retrieved in a survey of the literature were investigated. We divided Kirner's deformity into three types according to the site of curvature: the epiphyseal line, diaphysis, and distal tip.

Metacarpal hypoplasia associated with congenital constriction band syndrome.

Purpose: The amputation of digits that occurs in association with congenital constriction band syndrome (CCBS) is often described as similar to that resulting from trauma. Some previous studies have suggested that no bone hypoplasia is present in the affected limb proximal to the amputated part. The purpose of this study was to report our series of patients with metacarpal hypoplasia in amputated digits associated with CCBS.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumor with diffuse mesenteric metastases.

Although malignant gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) sometimes show peritoneal dissemination, diffuse metastasis to only the mesentery is rare. We describe the unusual case of GIST in a 69-year-old woman who showed multiple nodules restricted only to the mesentery except the surface of the small and large bowel, omentum, and abdominal wall. These small nodules were similar to those seen in leiomyomatosis peritonealis disseminata.

Antiviral effects of geranylgeranylacetone: enhancement of MxA expression and phosphorylation of PKR during influenza virus infection.

A cyclic polyisoprenoid compound, geranylgeranylacetone (GGA), has been used as antiulcer drug. GGA is also a potent inducer of heat shock proteins (HSPs). HSPs are considered to induce an antiviral effect; however, the detailed mechanism is unknown.

Anti-herbicide single-chain antibody expression confers herbicide tolerance in transgenic plants.

An anti-chlorpropham single-chain variable-fragment (scFv) gene was introduced into Arabidopsis in a manner to express the antibody fragment in each of four different subcellular compartments. The accumulation of scFv in transgenic plants was detected by targeting the fragment in the endoplasmic reticulum or apoplastic space, or by expressing the fragment as a glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored protein, while no accumulation could be detected by targeting the fragment in the cytosol. Transgenic plants accumulating the scFv gene at a high level in the endoplasmic reticulum had enhanced tolerance to chlorpropham in comparison with the non-transformants.

Phytol induces programmed cell death in human lymphoid leukemia Molt 4B cells.

The exposure of human lymphoid leukemia Molt 4B cells to phytol which was isolated from Lolium multiflorum Lam and identified by MS, and 1H- and 13C-NMR, led to both growth inhibition and the induction of programmed cell death (apoptosis). Morphological change showing apoptotic bodies was observed in the cells treated with phytol. The fragmentation by phytol of DNA to oligonucleosomal-sized fragments that are characteristics of apoptosis was observed to be concentration- and time-dependent.

Morphological and atomic analytical changes of root canal wall dentin after treatment with thirty-eight percent Ag(NH3)2F solution and CO2 laser.

Objective: The morphological and atomic analytical changes of the root canal wall dentin, treated with 38% diamine silver fluoride [Ag(NH3)2F] solution and irradiated by carbon dioxide (CO2) laser at the continuous wave mode were evaluated in vitro.

Summary Background Data: There has been no report on the morphological or atomic analytical changes of the effect of Ag(NH3)2F solution and CO2 laser on root canal walls.

Methods: Eighty extracted human single-rooted teeth were instrumented using a conventional technique and randomly divided into 8 groups of 10 teeth each.

Effect of Er:YAG laser treatment on the root canal walls of human teeth: an SEM study.

The purposes of the study were to observe the morphological changes on root canal walls after instrumentation and irrigation, and assess the efficacy of conventional cleansing procedures and the effectiveness of Er:YAG laser in removing debris and smear layer from the root canal walls. Thirty-six endodontically treated human mandibular incisor teeth with single root canals were bisected longitudinally and divided into three groups of 12 teeth. Group 1 (G1) was left unlased as a control.

A study on microleakage after resin filling of Class V cavities prepared by Er:YAG laser.

Objective: The aims of this study were to investigate microleakage after composite resin filling to class V cavities prepared by Er:YAG laser and to compare the results with those obtained by a conventional method using an air turbine in vitro.

Summary Background Data: There has been no report of the microleakage study on class V cavities prepared by Er:YAG laser.

Methods: Forty-eight human extracted single root teeth were used in this study.

Electrocution injuries. A case report.

A case study of a high-voltage injury was presented. The short period that the patient was in contact with the electrical source prevented further systemic injury and may have saved her life. The patient's present neuritis is indicative of long-term sequelae of electrocution injury, in which ischemic necrosis of the surrounding nerves can occur near or at the site of the exit wound.
