The emergence of highly successful genetic lineages of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) poses a challenge in human healthcare due to increased morbidity and mortality rates. The RdJ clone (CC5-ST105-SCCmecII-t002 lineage), previously identified in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was linked to bloodstream infections and features a mutation in the aur gene (encoding aureolysin). Additionally, clinical isolates derived from this clone were more effective at evading monocytic immune responses.

The Endogenous Retinoic Acid Receptor Pathway Is Exploited by Mycobacterium tuberculosis during Infection, Both In Vitro and In Vivo.

Retinoic acid (RA) is a fundamental vitamin A metabolite involved in regulating immune responses through the nuclear RA receptor (RAR) and retinoid X receptor. While performing experiments using THP-1 cells as a model for Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, we observed that serum-supplemented cultures displayed high levels of baseline RAR activation in the presence of live, but not heat-killed, bacteria, suggesting that M. tuberculosis robustly induces the endogenous RAR pathway.

Background: Histamine receptors are known to participate in spinal cord nociceptive transmission, and previous studies have suggested that histaminergic receptors are involved in the analgesic effects of morphine. In this report we examined the role of the BCG Ag85B protein in host cell interaction and vaccine-induced protection against virulent Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection.

Ureteral Compromise in Laparoscopic Versus Vaginal Uterosacral Ligament Suspension: A Retrospective Cohort.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate if ureteral compromise is significantly different between laparoscopic and vaginal uterosacral ligament suspension (USLS).

Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study comparing all women who underwent laparoscopic and vaginal USLSs at 2 institutions (part of a single training program with procedures performed by 11 fellowship-trained Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery gynecologic surgeons) between January 2008 and June 2013.

Results: A total of 208 patients in the study underwent a USLS, 148 in the laparoscopic group and 60 in the vaginal group.

Alkylphenols including 4-tert-pentylphenol (4-PP) have been shown to alter sexual differentiation in fish due to their estrogenic properties. Medaka (Oryzias latipes) is so sensitive to these substances because morphological sex reversal and testis-ova induction are well developed in the exposed males. However, little work has been done to characterize the molecular effects of estrogenic substances on the morphological and gonadal feminization in male fish.

Validity of the body mass index and fat mass index as an indicator of obesity in children aged 3-5 year.

The validity of the BMI and fat mass index (FMI) as indicators of obesity was evaluated in a group of 3-5 yr old (n=486) children. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) was measured (using 50 kHz and tetrapolar electrodes) in order to calculate percent fat mass (%FM) and FMI (fat mass/stature squared). For boys, obesity was defined as > or =20%FM.

Gender differences in body fat of low- and high-body-mass children: relationship with body mass index.

The primary objective of this study was to determine gender differences in total body fat mass (TBFM) and body fat distribution (subcutaneous fat mass, SFM; and internal fat mass, IFM) in a cross-sectional sample of 280 children. Measurements of the body composition of 141 boys and 139 girls, all apparently healthy and aged 3-6 years were made using bioelectrical impedance. Determinations of impedance were made using a four-terminal impedance analyzer (TP-95K; Toyo Physical, Fukuoka, Japan).
