This study aimed to assess the effect of repeated irradiations of 660 nm photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) after photodynamic therapy (PDT) with curcumin on the viability of human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs). In this in vitro, experimental study, HGFs were cultured and assigned to five groups: One control group with no intervention and four experimental groups of PDT with curcumin, PBMT (660 nm laser irradiation) immediately after PDT, PBMT immediately and 24 hours after PDT and PBMT immediately and 24 hours and 48 hours after PDT. Developing an Early Warning System for Financial Networks: An Explainable Machine Learning Approach.

Identifying the influential variables that provide early warning of financial network instability is challenging, in part due to the complexity of the system, uncertainty of a failure, and nonlinear, time-varying relationships between network participants. In this study, we introduce a novel methodology to select variables that, from a data-driven and statistical modeling perspective, represent these relationships and may indicate that the financial network is trending toward instability. We introduce a novel variable selection methodology that leverages Shapley values and modified Borda counts, in combination with statistical and machine learning methods, to create an explainable linear model to predict relationship value weights between network participants.

One-carbon metabolism biomarkers and upper gastrointestinal cancer in the Golestan Cohort Study.

Incidence of esophageal and gastric cancer has been linked to low B-vitamin status. We conducted matched nested case-control studies of incident esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC; 340 case-control pairs) and gastric cancer (GC; 352 case-control pairs) within the Golestan Cohort Study. The primary exposure was plasma biomarkers: riboflavin and flavin mononucleotide (FMN) (vitamin B2), pyridoxal phosphate (PLP) (B6), cobalamin (B12), para-aminobenzoylglutamate (pABG) (folate), and total homocysteine (tHcy); and indicators for deficiency: 3-hydroxykyurenine-ratio (HK-r for vitamin B6) and methylmalonic acid (MMA for B12).

Prevalence and Incidence of Metabolic Syndrome and Its Components Among Waterpipe Users.

Objectives: To determine the associations between waterpipe use, duration, and intensity of use with prevalence and incidence of metabolic syndrome and its components (increased waist circumference, triglycerides, fasting glucose, blood pressure and decreased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol).

Methods: We conducted cross-sectional and prospective analyses using data from the Pars Cohort Study in southern Iran, encompassing 9,264 participants at the baseline, and 5,002 randomly selected in a repeated follow-up. We used multivariate logistic regression models adjusted for age, sex, education, wealth score, physical activity and cigarette pack-years to report odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI).

Toxicity of waterpipe tobacco smoking: the role of flavors, sweeteners, humectants, and charcoal.

Waterpipe tobacco (WPT) smoking is a public health concern, particularly among youth and young adults. The global spread of WPT use has surged because the introduction of pre-packaged flavored and sweetened WPT, which is widely marketed as a safer tobacco alternative. Besides flavorants and sugars, WPT additives include humectants, which enhance the moisture and sweetness of WPT, act as solvents for flavors, and impart smoothness to the smoke, thus increasing appeal to users.

Exposure to second-hand smoke and risk of lung cancer among Iranian population: A multicenter case-control study.

Objective: Despite the implementation of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) program in Iran, the regulation of second-hand smoke (SHS) exposure-an often-overlooked hazard-, still requires improvement. We employed a multi-center case-control study to investigate the association between exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) from various tobacco products (cigarettes, water-pipes, pipes, and chopogh), opium use, and the risk of lung cancer.

A comparative evaluation of the effects of 635 nm laser on cell proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of buccal fat pad mesenchymal stem cells.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of 635 nm diode laser with different powers on undifferentiated mesenchymal stem cells obtained from buccal fat pad. Human buccal fat stem cells were cultured in DMEM containing 10% FBS, penicillin, and streptomycin under 5% CO and 95% humidity. Cells were cultured in 96-well plate and 24 h later, laser irradiation with 635 nm diode laser was performed in four groups of 200, 300, 400, and 500 mW powers in addition to the control group with the same energy density of 4 J/cm.
