Suppression of angiogenesis and tumor growth by selective inhibition of angiopoietin-2.

Angiopoietin-2 (Ang2) exhibits broad expression in the remodeling vasculature of human tumors but very limited expression in normal tissues, making it an attractive candidate target for antiangiogenic cancer therapy. To investigate the functional consequences of blocking Ang2 activity, we generated antibodies and peptide-Fc fusion proteins that potently and selectively neutralize the interaction between Ang2 and its receptor, Tie2. Systemic treatment of tumor-bearing mice with these Ang2-blocking agents resulted in tumor stasis, followed by elimination of all measurable tumor in a subset of animals.

Observation and properties of the X(3872) decaying to J/psipi(+)pi(-) in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV.

We report the observation of the X(3872) in the J/psipi(+)pi(-) channel, with J/psi decaying to mu(+)mu(-), in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV. Using approximately 230 pb(-1) of data collected with the Run II D0 detector, we observe 522+/-100 X(3872) candidates.

Search for doubly charged higgs boson pair production in the decay to mu(+)mu(+)mu(-)mu(-) in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV.

A search for pair production of doubly charged Higgs bosons in the process pp -->H(++)H(--) -->mu(+)mu(+)mu(-)mu(-) is performed with the D0 run II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The analysis is based on a sample of inclusive dimuon data collected at an energy of sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 113 pb(-1).

Search for narrow tt resonances in pp collisions at square root of (s)=1.8 TeV.

A search for narrow resonances that decay into tt pairs has been performed using 130 pb(-1) of data in the lepton + jets channel collected by the Dphi detector in pp collisions at square root of (s)=1.8 TeV. There is no significant deviation observed from the standard-model predictions at a top-quark mass of 175 GeV/c2.

A precision measurement of the mass of the top quark.

The standard model of particle physics contains parameters--such as particle masses--whose origins are still unknown and which cannot be predicted, but whose values are constrained through their interactions. In particular, the masses of the top quark (M(t)) and W boson (M(W)) constrain the mass of the long-hypothesized, but thus far not observed, Higgs boson. A precise measurement of M(t) can therefore indicate where to look for the Higgs, and indeed whether the hypothesis of a standard model Higgs is consistent with experimental data.

Prior experience, antioxidants, and mitochondrial cofactors improve cognitive function in aged beagles.

Results of this study support the free-radical theory of aging and demonstrated that providing higher levels of vitamin E in food resulted in higher serum vitamin E concentrations and improved performance on landmark-discrimination tasks in aged dogs. Factors other than vitamin E also contributed to the response but remain undefined.

Vascular effects of sildenafil in hypertensive cardiac transplant recipients.

Background: Sildenafil is commonly used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction in hypertensive male cardiac transplant recipients (CTR); however, little is known about the vascular effects of sildenafil in these patients.

Methods: Central and peripheral arterial blood pressure (BP), heart rate, and brachial artery reactivity were determined in 15 hypertensive male CTR before and after oral sildenafil (50 mg) administration.

Effects of age on measures of complex working memory span in the beagle dog (Canis familiaris) using two versions of a spatial list learning paradigm.

The present study used two versions of a spatial list learning (SLL) paradigm to examine the effects of increased cognitive load on visuospatial working memory processes in young and old beagle dogs. In the first experiment, young, and a select group of old dogs were first presented with one item, then two, and then three, and were rewarded for responding to the novel position. The dogs were able to learn the task at short delays, but compared with young dogs, old dogs performed worse at delays of 10 sec, and could not reach longer delays.

Size and reversal learning in the beagle dog as a measure of executive function and inhibitory control in aging.

Several studies converge on the idea that executive processes age earlier than other cognitive processes. As part of a larger effort to investigate age-related changes in executive processes in the dog, inhibitory control was measured in young, middle-aged, old, and senior dogs using size discrimination learning and reversal procedures. Compared to young and middle-aged dogs, old and senior dogs were impaired on both the initial learning of the size task and the reversal of original reward contingencies.

Search for the production of single sleptons through R-parity violation in pp; collisions at square root (s) =1.8 TeV.

We report the first search for supersymmetric particles via s-channel production and decay of smuons or muon sneutrinos at hadronic colliders. The data for the two-muon and two-jets final states were collected by the D0 experiment and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 94+/-5 pb(-1). Assuming that R parity is violated via the single coupling lambda'211, the number of candidate events is in agreement with expectation from the standard model.

Landmark discrimination learning in the dog: effects of age, an antioxidant fortified food, and cognitive strategy.

The present experiments examined the role of various factors on performance of a landmark discrimination learning task in beagle dogs. Experiments 1 and 2 looked at the effects of age and food composition.

Search for R-parity violating supersymmetry in two-muon and four-jet topologies.

We present results of a search for R-parity-violating decay of the neutralino chi;01, taken as the lightest supersymmetric particle, to a muon and two jets. Inhibition of interleukin-1 but not tumor necrosis factor suppresses neovascularization in rat models of corneal angiogenesis and adjuvant arthritis.

Objective: To assess the capacities of the cytokine inhibitors interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra; anakinra) and PEGylated soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor I (PEG sTNFRI; pegsunercept) to suppress neovascularization.

Methods: A corneal angiogenesis assay was performed by implanting nylon discs impregnated with an angiogenic stimulator (basic fibroblast growth factor or vascular endothelial growth factor) into one cornea of female Sprague-Dawley rats. Animals were treated with IL-1Ra or PEG sTNFRI for 7 days, after which new vessels were quantified.

Search for the scalar top quark in pp collisions at square root[s] = 1.8 TeV.

We have performed a search for scalar top quark (stop) pair production in the inclusive electron-muon-missing transverse energy final state, using a sample of pp events corresponding to 108.3 pb(-1) of data collected with the D0 detector at Fermilab. The search is done in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model assuming that the sneutrino is the lightest supersymmetric particle.

Search for leptoquark pairs decaying into nunu+jets in pp collisions at square root[s] = 1.8 TeV.

We present the results of a search for leptoquark (LQ) pairs in (85.2+/-3.7) pb(-1) of pp* collider data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron.

Direct search for charged higgs bosons in decays of top quarks.

We present a search for charged Higgs bosons in decays of pair-produced top quarks in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV recorded by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. With no evidence for signal, we exclude most regions of the ( M(H+/-),tan(beta)) parameter space where the decay t--> H(+)b has a branching fraction >0.

Pediculosis in a school population.

This nonexperimental, retrospective study of elementary, middle school, and high school children (a) determined the prevalence of pediculosis, (b) identified populations susceptible to head lice infestation, and (c) examined the role of the school nurse in pediculosis management. The findings showed the highest prevalence of pediculosis was among younger school-age children, and girls were 3 times more likely to be infested than boys. Hispanic children had the highest rate of infestation, followed by Caucasian children.

The clinical skills laboratory: a cost-effective venue for teaching clinical skills to third-year medical students.

The authors taught clinical examination and procedural skills using manikins in a clinical skills laboratory as a part of an integrated curriculum in the third-year clerk-ship. This teaching modality was effective and well received by students and faculty.

Is unilateral adrenalectomy an alternative treatment for ACTH-independent macronodular adrenal hyperplasia?: Long-term follow-up of four cases.

Objective: ACTH-independent macronodular adrenal hyperplasia is a rare cause of Cushing's syndrome. Bilateral adrenalectomy is considered the treatment of choice, but the patient is obliged to receive lifetime steroid replacement therapy and is susceptible to adrenal insufficiency crisis. New therapeutic alternatives are being proposed as new etiopathological features of the disease are known.

[Penile and urethral lesion caused by metallic ring. Reconstruction with radial free flap].

We report a case of a man with a severe penile injure caused by a metallic ring placed in the penile shaft for 48 hours, it coursed with partial urethral section and ischemia of the whole penile skin and dartos. It was solved with surgical excision of all death tissue and posterior reconstruction using a forearm free flap, the vascular supply came from epigastric vessels, we used hair-free skin from forearm for the urethroplasty. Ethetic and functional results obtained are successful.
