Voluntary Exercise Rescues the Spatial Memory Deficit Associated With Early Life Isoflurane Exposure in Male Rats.

Background: Early life anesthesia exposure results in long-term cognitive deficits in rats. Environmental enrichment consisting of social housing, a stimulating environment, and voluntary exercise can rescue this deficit. We hypothesized that exercise alone is sufficient to rescue the cognitive deficit associated with perinatal anesthesia.

Auscultation versus Point-of-care Ultrasound to Determine Endotracheal versus Bronchial Intubation: A Diagnostic Accuracy Study.

Background: Unrecognized malposition of the endotracheal tube (ETT) can lead to severe complications in patients under general anesthesia. The focus of this double-blinded randomized study was to assess the accuracy of point-of-care ultrasound in verifying the correct position of the ETT and to compare it with the accuracy of auscultation.

Methods: Forty-two adult patients requiring general anesthesia with ETT were consented.

Pain Management in Pregnancy: Multimodal Approaches.

Nonobstetrical causes of pain during pregnancy are very common and can be incapacitating if not treated appropriately. Recent reports in the literature show that a significant percentage of pregnant women are treated with opioids during pregnancy. To address common pain conditions that present during pregnancy and the available pharmacological and nonpharmacological treatment options, for each of the pain conditions identified, a search using MEDLINE, PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases was performed.

Principles of pharmacologic hemodynamic management and closed-loop systems.

Every day, physicians in critical-care settings are challenged with the hemodynamic management of patients with severe cardiovascular derangements. There is a potential role for closed-loop (automated) systems to assist clinicians in managing these patients and growing interest in the possible applications. In this review, we discuss the basic principles of critical-care hemodynamic management and the closed-loop systems that have been developed to help in this setting.
