Understanding the extent and implications of microplastic (MP) pollution along the São Paulo State coastline in southeastern Brazil is crucial, considering the significant environmental burden imposed by industrial and port activities in this region. This research aims to understand the complex dynamics of MP deposition on sandy beaches, which poses severe environmental risks to coastal ecosystems, marine organisms, and humans. Using a comprehensive five-step methodology-geodetic surveys, sediment collection, μ-RAMAN spectrometry for polymer identification, and multivariate statistical models-we analyzed the distribution of MPs across six coastal compartments (C1 to C6).

Clinical evaluation of different types of teeth in in-office whitening.

Objective: This prospective case series aimed to clinically evaluate the bleaching effect, spontaneous tooth sensitivity, and variation in the thermal sensation threshold of different groups of teeth undergoing in-office bleaching.

Method And Materials: Ten patients received conventional bleaching treatment: 35% hydrogen peroxide with three bleaching sessions of 45 minutes, evaluating color change (∆E and ∆E00), Whitening Index (WID), and tooth sensitivity (visual analog scale). Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most prevalent type of brain tumour; although advancements in treatment have been made, the median survival time for GBM patients has persisted at 15 months. This study is aimed at investigating the genetic alterations and clinical features of GBM patients to find predictors of survival. GBM patients' methylation and gene expression data along with clinical information from TCGA were retrieved.

On the Nuisance Parameter Elimination Principle in Hypothesis Testing.

The Non-Informative Nuisance Parameter Principle concerns the problem of how inferences about a parameter of interest should be made in the presence of nuisance parameters. [ F]Fluoropyridine-losartan: A new approach toward human Positron Emission Tomography imaging of Angiotensin II Type 1 receptors.

Angiotensin II type 1 receptors (AT R) blocker losartan is used in patients with renal and cardiovascular diseases. [ F]fluoropyridine-losartan has shown favorable binding profile for quantitative renal PET imaging of AT R with selective binding in rats and pigs, low interference of radiometabolites and appropriate dosimetry for clinical translation. A new approach was developed to produce [ F]fluoropyridine-losartan in very high molar activity.

Structural Effects on the Antioxidant Properties of Amino Acid Betaxanthins.

Betaxanthins are natural products with high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Here, we describe the semisynthesis of twenty-one betaxanthins derived from proteinogenic amino acids, including the elusive betaxanthin of l-cysteine and two betaxanthins derived from l-lysine, and rationalize their antioxidant properties in mechanistic terms. The antioxidant capacity and redox potential of these betaxanthins were compared to those of model betaxanthins derived from dopamine, l-DOPA (L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine), and pyrrolidine and structure-property relationships were established by using matched molecular pair analysis and a model developed using a genetic algorithm.

Mn-doped CoO for acid, neutral and alkaline electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction.

This work reports the application of Mn-doped CoO oxides in the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The materials were characterized by structural, morphological, and electrochemical techniques. The oxides with higher Co : Mn molar ratio presented a lower electron transfer resistance, and consequently the most promising OER activities.

Reannotation of Fly Amanita l-DOPA Dioxygenase Gene Enables Its Cloning and Heterologous Expression.

The l-DOPA dioxygenase of (AmDODA) participates in the biosynthesis of betalain- and hygroaurin-type natural pigments. AmDODA is encoded by the gene, whose DNA sequence was inferred from cDNA and gDNA libraries almost 30 years ago. However, reports on its heterologous expression rely on either the original 5'-truncated cDNA plasmid or artificial gene synthesis.

The laborious microscopic agglutination test (MAT) is the gold standard serologic test for laboratory diagnosis of leptospirosis. We developed EIA based serologic assays using recombinant proteins (rLigA, rLigB, rLipL32) and whole-cell extracts from eight Leptospira serovars as antigen and assessed the diagnostic performance of the new assay within each class, against MAT positive (MAT+) human sera panels from Portugal/PT (n = 143) and Angola/AO (n = 100).
