Sponges interact with diverse and rich communities of bacteria that are phylogenetically often distinct from their free-living counterparts. Recent genomics and metagenomic studies have indicated that bacterial sponge symbionts also have distinct functional features from free-living bacteria; however, it is unclear, if such genome-derived functional signatures are common and present in different symbiont taxa. We therefore compared here a large set of genomes from cultured (Pseudovibrio, Ruegeria and Aquimarina) and yet-uncultivated (Synechococcus) bacteria found in either sponge-associated or free-living sources.

The diversity of the microbial communities associated with marine sponges has been extensively studied, but their functioning and interactions within the sponge holobiont are only recently being appreciated. Sponge-associated microorganisms are known for the production of a range of inhibitory metabolites with biotechnological application, but the ecological role that these compounds remains elusive. Since these analyses have rarely been conducted using ticks collected from Southern Europe, this study was carried out so as to bring new insights into the diversity of phleboviruses circulating in Southern Portugal. However, the molecular mechanism(s) triggered by mitochondrial deficits that lead to neurodegeneration remain elusive. Herein, we propose a new mechanism by which mitochondrial loss of potential leads to a dysfunction in autophagy/mitophagy due to the overactivation of SIRT2, a tubulin deacetylase that regulates microtubule network acetylation, and provide insights into the association between metabolism, phosphorylation, and Aβ aggregation.
