There is growing interest in local elimination of soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infection in endemic settings. In such settings, highly sensitive diagnostics are needed to detect STH infection. We compared double-slide Kato-Katz, the most commonly used copromicroscopic detection method, to multi-parallel quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) in 2,799 stool samples from children aged 2-12 years in a setting in rural Bangladesh with predominantly low STH infection intensity.

Mesocosms are an invaluable tool for addressing the complex issue of exposure during nanoecotoxicological testing. This experimental strategy was used to take into account parameters as the interactions between the NPs and naturally occurring (in)organic colloids (heteroaggregation), or the flux between compartments of the ecosystems (aqueous phase, sediments, biota) when assessing the impacts of CeO2 NPs in aquatic ecosystems. In this study, we determine the transfer, redox transformation, and impacts of 1 mg L(-1) of bare and citrate coated CeO2-NPs toward an ecologically relevant organism (snail, Planorbarius corneus) exposed 4 weeks in a complex experimental system mimicking a pond ecosystem.

Idiopathic talipes equinovarus (ITEV), or isolated clubfoot, is a common developmental anomaly that is characterized by a rigid foot, adducted forefoot, cavus midfoot, equinovarus of the hindfoot, and hypoplastic calf musculature. The etiology of this common birth defect is largely unknown, but genetic factors have been implicated in population and family studies and maternal smoking during pregnancy has been identified as an environmental risk factor. The biotransformation of exogenous substances, such as tobacco smoke, is modulated by numerous genes including N-acetylation genes, NAT1 and NAT2.

Doxorubicin is an effective antineoplastic agent, but it frequently causes dose-related cardiotoxic effects. Because the atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) level is elevated in children with heart defects, the authors measured the ANP levels in children to determine whether ANP might serve as a simple diagnostic indicator of cardiotoxic effects. Sixteen patients, 5 to 19 years of age, who were being treated with doxorubicin (45 mg/m2 body surface area) for various malignancies had ANP levels measured in plasma.

Seven black patients with mild hereditary elliptocytosis (HE) from five unrelated families were studied. The erythrocytes of these patients exhibited an abnormal thermal sensitivity (between 45 degrees C and 47 degrees C instead of 49 degrees C). Five patients with hereditary elliptocytosis (HE) from two unrelated black families were studied. The patients had prominent elliptocytosis and a decreased erythrocyte resistance to heat treatment. In one infant blood smears showed elliptocytosis and poikilocytosis; his erythrocytes fagmented at a lower temperature than those of his mother and sister, both having typical mild HE.

The activity of 18 red blood cell (RBC) enzymes and reduced glutathione (GSH) content were measured in 70 normal subjects, in 50 heterozygous beta-thalassaemia carriers and in 50 non-thalassaemic patients with haemolytic anaemia and high reticulocyte counts. In addition, pyrimidine 5'nucleotidase (P5N) activity was also determined in 34 patients with hypochromic, microcytic, iron deficiency anaemia. beta-Thalassaemia trait was associated with an increase in almost all of the enzyme activities, except for 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate synthetase (BPGS) and glutathione reductase (GR) which were normal and for acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and P5N which were slightly and markedly decreased respectively.
