The World Health Organization Global Action Plan recommends integrated surveillance programs as crucial strategies for monitoring antibiotic resistance. Although several national surveillance programs are in place for clinical and veterinary settings, no such schemes exist for monitoring antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the environment. Objective: To propose the hypothesis that non-celiac gluten sensitivity is associated with chronic low-back pain related to spondyloarthritis, and a gluten free diet has a therapeutic benefit in a subgroup of patients. Gut involvement is a well-known association of spondyloarthritis but limited to a few disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease. Currently the therapeutic implication of this association is pharmacologic treatment for inflammation with immunosupresive drugs for both diseases.

An analytical method was developed and validated for the determination of ten pesticides in sewage sludge coming from an agro-food industry. The method was based on the application of Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, and Safe (QuEChERS) extraction for solid sewage sludge and SPE extraction for sludge aqueous phase, followed by liquid chromatography (LC) coupled to hybrid quadrupole/linear ion trap mass spectrometry (QqLIT-MS). This study has been carried out to assess the performance of a combined system consisting of a membrane bioreactor (MBR) followed by an advanced oxidation process (Fenton/Photo-Fenton) for removing the fungicide thiabendazole (TBZ) in a simulated agro-food industrial wastewater. Previous studies have shown the presence of TBZ in the effluent of an agro-food industry treated by activated sludge in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR), thus reinforcing the need for alternative treatments for removal. We describe the parameters that drive the design and modeling of the Rover Environmental Monitoring Station (REMS) Ground Temperature Sensor (GTS), an instrument aboard NASA's Mars Science Laboratory, and report preliminary test results. REMS GTS is a lightweight, low-power, and low cost pyrometer for measuring the Martian surface kinematic temperature. Background: In an effort to reduce the complications of Scopinaro's biliopancreatic diversion (BPD), in 1989 we introduced the modification of lengthening the alimentary channel preserving most of the jejunum-ileum, by creating a short biliopancreatic limb (50 cm) and maintaining 50 cm of common limb (Larrad 50-50 BPD).

The effect of the polyvinylpyrrolidone and/or hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin on the photo-lability of aqueous solutions of the anti-inflammatory drug Naproxen was studied. Kinetic studies revealed that the presence of all of these additives reduced drug photodegradation. In all cases, the presence of the different additives elicited a change in the photomixture composition, being the alcoholic derivative the major photoproduct formed.

Recombinant dimeric full-length Cph1 holophytochrome and its C-terminally-truncated monomeric species [Cph1Delta2, comprising the chromophore-bearing N-terminal sensory module (residues 1 to 514)] from the cyanobacterium Synechocystis expressed in E. coli and reconstituted in vitro with phycocyanobilin (PCB) were investigated with the use of fluorescence spectroscopy and photochemistry in the temperature range from 85 to 293 K. Holoprotein assembly in Cph1 apparently proceeds via intermediate states with the emission maximum at 680-690 nm (I685) and 700 nm (I700) and a half-life time, at room temperature, of < or =5 s.

Femtosecond time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy was employed to characterize for the first time the primary photoisomerization dynamics of a bacterial phytochrome system in the two thermally stable states of the photocycle. The 85-kDa phytochrome Cph1 from the cyanobacterium Synechocystis PCC 6803 expressed in Escherichia coli was reconstituted with phycocyanobilin (Cph1-PCB) and phycoerythrobilin (Cph1-PEB). The red-light-absorbing form Pr of Cph1-PCB shows an approximately 150 fs relaxation in the S(1) state after photoexcitation at 650 nm.
