The anthropogenic marine debris, especially abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded Fishing Gear (ALDFG), represents a rising concern, because of its potential harmful impact on the marine animal forests. We carried out 13 km of video recordings, by means of a remotely operated vehicle, from 10 to 210 m depth, in an anthropised area of the Tyrrhenian Sea (Mediterranean Sea). This site, for its high ecological importance and biodiversity value, has been identified for the establishment of a new marine protected area (MPA).

In this work, infrared activation of the methyl-substituted Criegee intermediate, syn-CHCHOO, in the CH stretch fundamental region (2850-3150 cm) is shown to result in unimolecular decay to OH radical products. These excitation energies correspond to only half of the transition state barrier height, and thus the resultant 1,4 H atom transfer that leads to OH products occurs exclusively by quantum mechanical tunneling.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFA modulated coherent (La,Sr)CoO3-δ/(Ce,Gd)O2-δ heterostructure is characterized for the first time for its electronic and chemical properties. 2D-multilayer architectures are deposited on NdGaO3 (110) single crystal substrate by pulsed laser deposition, resulting in epitaxial structures with in-plane lattice rotation that, via the metal oxides' interfaces, induces mutual structural rearrangements. Our results show that (La,Sr)CoO3-d thin films of 10-100 nm are chemically unstable when exposed to air at 600 °C during electrical cyclic stress-tests.

Here, we report the skipping of exon 5 as a legitimate splicing event generating PPARγΔ5, a previously unidentified naturally occurring truncated isoform of PPARγ, which lacks the entire ligand-binding domain. PPARγΔ5 is endogenously expressed in human adipose tissue and, during adipocyte differentiation, lacks ligand-dependent transactivation ability and acts as a dominant-negative isoform reducing PPARγ activity.

Methods: The sample included 30 consecutive PPA and 45 MD patients who completed the SAND battery together with a clinical interview and a neurological/neuropsychological examination and 130 healthy controls (HC).
Results: The SAND battery showed good internal consistency and good convergent and divergent validity.
The cubic phase of pure zirconia (ZrO) is stabilized in dense thin films through a controlled introduction of oxygen vacancies (O defects) by cold-plasma-based sputtering deposition. Here, we show that the cubic crystals present at the film/substrate interface near-region exhibit fast ionic transport, which is superior to what is obtained with similar yttrium-stabilized cubic zirconia thin films.

By monitoring the diffraction intensity of a superlattice reflection that is directly related to the structural order parameter of the soft-mode driven antiferrodistortive phase in Ca:SrTiO_{3}, we observe an ultrafast relaxation on a 0.2 ps timescale of the rotation of the oxygen octahedron, which is found to be independent of the initial temperature despite large changes in the corresponding soft-mode frequency.
