This article aims to provide a systematic review of the literature on animal biomass and biogas plants through an analysis of externalities and benefits in economic, social, and environmental terms. In recent years, the spread of biogas plants has played an important role, especially in rural areas, generating benefits not only for the individual farm but for entire communities, contributing to the reduction of energy poverty and, at the same time, promoting the production of energy and organic manure. In light of the findings, the study argues that: (a) more public subsidies are needed; (b) the deployment of an appropriate policy mix would encourage the spread of small and medium-sized plants, with a reduction in road transport; and (c) targeted and diversified investments are needed on a geographic-by-geographic basis.

The family-level placement of the species Pacificana cockayniHogg, 1904 (Araneae, Miturgidae) has been ambiguous for over a century, with the monotypic genus Pacificana initially placed in Agelenidae, later transferred to Amaurobioidinae (Anyphaenidae), and presently in Miturgidae. A recent work describing the male and molecular data consisting of a single mitochondrial gene, cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, confirmed that the species is part of the marronoid clade; however, these data did not result in a conclusive family-level placement. Here, we use low-coverage whole genome sequencing (lcWGS) combined with data from the Sequence Read Archive to infer a phylogeny from ultraconserved elements (UCEs) and six legacy Sanger loci.

The central nervous system (CNS) of Chelicerata has remained conserved since the Cambrian, yet few studies have examined its variability within chelicerate orders including Scorpiones. The scorpion CNS comprises the prosomal ganglion and opisthosomal ventral nerve cord. We visualize the scorpion CNS with microCT, explore morphological variation across taxa, compare the scorpion CNS to other arachnids, and create a terminology glossary and literature review to assist future studies.

Phosphorus recovery from Sewage Sludge Ashes (SSA) by wet chemical extraction followed by selective precipitation has gained great attention in recent years, attempting to reduce the anthropic pressure on natural reserves. This study investigates the selective precipitation process at lab- and small pilot-scales by means of two conventional and one innovative precipitating agents, the latter derived from a low-grade magnesium oxide mining by-product (LG-MgO named PC8), assessing the role of the most relevant operating parameters. Lab-scale experiments were performed on leachates obtained from bottom and fly ashes, in which several operating conditions were tested, differing in the type of precipitating agent, target pH and nutrient molar ratio.

Article Synopsis
  • In the TOPAZ-1 trial, patients with biliary tract cancers (BTC) who had recurrence within 6 months of surgery were excluded, which often happens in practice. This study looked into the effectiveness of cisplatin-gemcitabine-durvalumab (CGD) in patients who did experience early recurrence.
  • The study enrolled 178 BTC patients who had surgery and then underwent treatment with CGD after experiencing either early or late disease recurrence. Key goals were to measure overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS).
  • Results showed no significant differences in OS and PFS between early and late relapse groups, suggesting CGD is effective regardless of when the cancer
