Serosurvey for "acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis" virus (Enterovirus 70) antibodies in the Southeastern United States, with review of the literature and some epidemiologic implications.

Acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis (AHC) has been epidemic throughout much of the Eastern Hemisphere since its emergence in central West Africa in 1969. The disease had a distinctive clinical picture and an unusual geographic epidemiology. Between 1969 and 1975 AHC has occurred almost exclusively in crowded coastal areas of tropical countries during hot, rainy seasons.

Adipose tissue blood flow and cellularity in the growing rabbit.

Resting blood flow was measured in isolated, innervated, epigastric fat-pads of 27 male rabbits during growth in the 1st yr of life and found to vary widely in range (7.6-28.1 ml/100 g tissue per min).

One hundred forty-four patients are studied over an 18 month period. Postpartum and postabortal insertions of intrauterine contraceptive devices using the Lippes Loop and the Dalkon Shield are compared. The age, parity, previous methods of contraception, and marital status of the study group indicated a poorly motivated patient population.

Metabolic patterns and insulin responsiveness of enlarging fat cells.

The rate and pattern of glucose metabolism, basal lipolysis, and intracellular concentration of free fatty acids were determined in isolated epididymal fat cell preparations (mean volume 30-800 pl) from rats on the basis of fat cell number and in relation to the cell volume. An unusual theca lutein cyst. Report of a case.

An unusual cyst lined by spontaneously lutenized theca cells--which appears to be the first reported in an adult female--is presented. It is postulated that its formation was due to an abnormal end-organ response and that the progesterone produced by it caused amenorrhea. It is suggested that theca lutein cysts may have two origins--an increased quantity of chorionic gonadotropin or end-organ hypersensitivity.
