To date, the occurrence of rare earth elements (REEs) in freshwater ecosystems has garnered limited attention in the scientific literature. Furthermore, a dearth of data exists regarding their potential bioaccumulation in freshwater fish. To fill this knowledge gap, we studied REEs concentrations in water, sediment, and fish specimens collected along the Po River (northwest Italy) and calculated biota-sediment accumulation (BSAF) and bioconcentration (BCF) factors, while taking into account fish feeding behavior and trophic level effects on the overall content of total REEs (ƩREEs).

  • Diabetic patients are more vulnerable to complications after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), and the effectiveness of new drug-eluting stents is still questionable for this group.
  • This study aimed to compare the Abluminus drug-eluting stent with a durable polymer everolimus-eluting stent in reducing neointimal hyperplasia among diabetic patients.
  • Results indicated no significant difference in neointimal volume or related outcomes between the two stent types, suggesting that the Abluminus stent did not outperform the DP-EES for this patient population.

Corpus Atrophic Gastritis (CAG) is characterised by iron malabsorption leading to iron deficiency anaemia (IDA), which rarely responds to oral therapy. Ferric carboxymaltose (FCM), shown to be a safe and effective intravenous iron therapy in other diseases, has not been investigated yet in CAG. Thus, we aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of FCM in CAG-related IDA.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused unprecedented changes to educational institutions, forcing their closure and a subsequent shift to online education to cater to student learning requirements. However, successful online learning depends on several factors and may also vary between countries. As such, this cross-sectional study sought to investigate how engagement of university students, a major driver of online learning, was influenced by course content, online interaction, student acceptance, and satisfaction with online learning, as well as self-efficacy across nine countries (China, India, Iran, Italy, Malaysia, Portugal, Serbia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates) during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Introduction: People represent the world in terms of two constructs: how something appears on the surface (appearance) and what it is underneath that surface (reality). Both constructs are central to various bodies of literature. What has not been done, however, is a systematic look at this collection of literature for overarching themes.

Aim: We hypothesized that adult patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) and ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) requiring prolonged resuscitation have more severe coronary artery disease (CAD) than those responding rapidly, and more severe CAD than patients with STEMI without OHCA.

Methods: Consecutive conscious and comatose OHCA patients with STEMI after reestablishment of spontaneous circulation (ROSC), and patients with refractory OHCA undergoing veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (E-CPR OHCA) were compared to STEMI without OHCA (STEMI no OHCA). CAD severity was assessed by a single physician blinded to the resuscitation method, time to ROSC and level of consciousness.

Arterial hypertension is the most prevalent cardiovascular risk factor worldwide. Despite the availability of many and effective antihypertensive medications, the prevalence of uncontrolled blood pressure (BP) remains high. As sympathetic hyperactivity has long been recognized as a major contributor to resistant hypertension, catheter-based renal denervation (RDN) has emerged as a new strategy to reduce BP.

Background: Myocardial ischemia (INOCA) and acute myocardial infarction with non-obstructive coronary artery disease (MINOCA) represent emerging entities in the landscape of interventional cardiology. These conditions have heterogeneous pathophysiological mechanisms and clinical presentations, complex diagnostics, and high prognostic significance.

Methods: This survey was carried out jointly by the GISE Young Committee with the support of the SICI-GISE Society and the ICOT group with the aim of evaluating the implementation of diagnostic-therapeutic pathways in cases of suspected/confirmed INOCA and MINOCA diseases.

Chest pain affects more than 100 million people globally, however up to 70% of patients undergoing invasive angiography do not have obstructive coronary artery disease and ischemia with non-obstructive coronary artery disease (INOCA) is often a cause of the clinical picture. The symptoms reported by INOCA patients are very heterogeneous and often misdiagnosed as non-cardiac leading to under-diagnosis/investigation and under-treatment. The underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of INOCA are multiple and include coronary vasospasm and microvascular dysfunction.

Aims: Angiotensin receptor-neprilysin inhibitor (ARNi) and sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitor (SGLT2i) improve outcomes in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) patients, however their effects in cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) recipients have been scarcely explored. This study investigated whether ARNi and SGLT2i 1) improve the rate of clinical and echocardiographic CRT response and 2) have different impact based on the ischemic or non-ischemic etiology.

Methods: HFrEF patients referred for CRT implant were grouped in no treatment (group 1), only ARNi (group 2) and both ARNi and SGLT2i (group 3).
