Trimethoprim (TMP) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) are bacteriostatic agents, which are co-administered to patients during infection treatment due to their synergetic effects. Once consumed, TMP and SMX end up in wastewater and are directed to municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) which fail to remove these contaminants from municipal wastewater. The discharge of WWTP effluents containing antibiotics in the environment is a major concern for public health as it contributes to the spread of antimicrobial resistance.

Methods: In this randomized, open-label, phase II study, we randomized COVID-19 patients requiring mechanical ventilation to receive either therapeutic enoxaparin or the standard anticoagulant thromboprophylaxis.
Several autopsy studies showed microthrombi in pulmonary circulation of severe COVID-19 patients. The major limitation of these investigations is that the autopsy provided static information. Some of these alterations could be secondary to the disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) observed as the final standard route to the multisystem organ failure exhibited in critically ill patients.

In this study, we used diverse cytogenetic and cytometric approaches to analyze male sporogenesis and gametogenesis for characterizing male reproductive output on seed production in Limonium ovalifolium and Limonium multiflorum. We showed here that the first species is mostly composed of diploid cytotypes with 2n = 16 chromosomes and the latter species by tetraploid cytotypes with 2n = 32, 34, 35, 36 chromosomes and had a genome roughly twice as big as the former one.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFIn order to delineate the spectrum and the relative abundance of beta-globin gene defects causing thalassaemia in the Portuguese population, a representative sample was analysed including 51 beta-thalassaemia carriers along with 26 patients representing different clinical phenotypes. Seven mutations were identified, four of which [codon 39 (C----T), 39%; intervening sequence (IVS) 1 nucleotide (nt) 1 (G----A), 26%; IVS 1 nt 110 (G----A), 17%; IVS 1 nt 6 (T----C), 15%] account for 97% of 93 beta-thalassaemia chromosomes. Two previously undescribed mutations, namely a C----T substitution at position--90 in the proximal CACCC box, and the deletion of nucleotides 4 and 5 (AG) in IVS2 were identified.
