Article Synopsis
  • The operating room infrastructure and equipment were designed primarily for male surgeons, leading to potential ergonomic challenges for the increasing number of female cardiac surgeons.
  • Female cardiac surgeons comprise only about 17% of the field and experience higher rates of work-related injuries and ergonomic issues compared to their male counterparts.
  • There is a need to adapt OR equipment and surgical tools to better suit female surgeons, which could improve their working conditions and support a more equitable surgical workforce.

Objective: In this clinical study, chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX) was chosen as the positive control group, and the clinical and biochemical efficacy of mouthwashes with green tea, white tea and essential oil (EO) as the active ingredients were aimed to be examined comprehensively.

Methods: A total of 112 participants with gingivitis were randomly assigned to four different groups and different mouthwashes were used for 4 weeks: CHX-MW group (as a positive control group), EO-MW group, GT-MW group and WT-MW group. The effects of the mouthwashes on plaque, inflammation and dental staining were evaluated by indexed scores at the beginning and 4th week.

Purpose: Given the occurrence of comorbidities in geriatric patients, the postoperative period of hip fractures may progress with high morbidity and mortality. Recently, several inflammatory markers have been used to evaluate the treatment course. Herein, we prospectively followed-up and examined the relationship between preoperative fibrinogen/albumin ratio(FAR) and morbidity/mortality in elderly patients with hip fracture.

In this study, innovative electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) were developed and characterized, demonstrating significant performance enhancements. Initially, NMC622@TiO was synthesized using a wet-chemical method with titanium(IV) ethoxide as the Ti source. Advanced structural investigations confirmed the successful formation of a core@shell structure with negligible cation mixing (Li/Ni) at the NMC622 surface, contributing to enhanced electrochemical performance.

Objective: Integrating heart failure (HF) guideline recommendations into clinical practice takes time and is often suboptimal in real-life settings. Physician-related factors may be significant barriers to the adoption of these guidelines. This survey aims to assess the current opinions of cardiologists practicing in Türkiye regarding the management of heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF).

Background: This cross-sectional study aims to investigate the retino-choroidal degenerative effects of periodontitis, metabolic syndrome (Mets), and the combination of these diseases using optical coherence tomography (OCT) measurements.

Methods: Ninety-two patients selected according to inclusion criteria were divided into four groups: systemically and periodontally healthy (control), systemically healthy periodontitis (PD), periodontally healthy metabolic syndrome (MetS), and periodontitis and metabolic syndrome combined (PD-MetS). The systemic inflammatory-oxidative effects of periodontitis and MetS were biochemically evaluated using the serum TNF-α level, IL-1β/IL-10 ratio, and oxidative stress index (OSI: TOS/TAS).

Carbon capture and storage in sub-seabed geological reservoirs is now officially included in the atmospheric CO emissions reduction policy and meets the agenda of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Over the last few years biological risk assessment studies have delivered substantial empirical data on possible consequences of CO leakages from underwater storage sites on benthic systems. Current knowledge on Carbon Capture and Storage CCS associated risks is limited to marine systems.

In this study, the performance of dual-chamber microbial fuel cells with carbon fiber (CF) anodes surface modified by multi-walled carbon nanotube coating (CF-MWCNT) and nitric acid treatment (CF-HNO) was compared. The performance of all these modified anodes was found to be better than bare electrode. The modified anodes were shown to significantly outperform the bare electrode anodes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated how postural stability is affected in individuals who have recovered from COVID-19 by comparing them to healthy controls using various balance tests.
  • Results showed no significant changes in overall balance for mCTSIB, but significant differences were observed in limits of stability, rhythmic weight shift, and the Romberg test between the two groups.
  • The findings suggest that while subjective reports of dizziness are common, objective measurement indicates possible decreased postural reflexes and vestibular issues, particularly in female patients post-COVID-19.

Article Synopsis
  • * Different SCoT primers generated between 28 to 50 DNA fragments, with SCoT32 showing the highest polymorphic information content (PIC) value, indicating its effectiveness for species differentiation alongside assessments of resolving power (RP).
  • * The research concludes that SCoT markers are superior in comparing to conventional genetic markers for understanding bacterial diversity and provide a promising method for future genetic studies and species identification in microbial research.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between procalcitonin (PCT) kinetic and estimated glomerular filtration rates (eGFR) in critically ill patients who had Gram-negative primary bloodstream infection (GN-BSI) and responded to the antimicrobial therapy.

Materials And Methods: This single-centered study was retrospective and observational. Critically ill GN-BSI patients over 18 years old who had clinical and microbiological responses to antibiotic treatment were included in the study.

Background: The risk factors for reoperation and mortality after partial and intermediate atrioventricular canal defect repair are unclear. This study assessed the mid-term outcomes and risk factors for reoperation and mortality after partial and intermediate atrioventricular canal defect surgery.

Methods: Ninety-seven patients who underwent primary repair of intermediate (n = 45) or partial (n = 52) atrioventricular canal defect between 2005 and 2019 were included in this single-centre study.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on translating the Measure of Activity Performance of the Hand (MAP-Hand) into Turkish and assessing its effectiveness for those with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
  • The translated MAP-Hand was pilot tested on 30 participants and later administered to 185 adults, collecting various physical and health-related data.
  • Results indicated that the Turkish MAP-Hand is reliable and valid, showing high internal consistency and strong correlations with disease activity, pain levels, and hand strength, proving its usefulness in evaluating hand function.

  • The study examined whether inhaled corticosteroids affect the severity and mortality of COVID-19 pneumonia among patients with chronic asthma and COPD.
  • It was a retrospective observational study, comparing two groups: one that used inhaled corticosteroids and one that did not, finding no significant difference in pneumonia severity between the groups.
  • Key risk factors for mortality included increasing age, mechanical ventilation, severe pneumonia, interstitial lung disease, and the use of prone position, while inhaled corticosteroid use did not correlate with increased severity or mortality.

Article Synopsis
  • - Despite advancements in medical interventions, viral pathogens continue to pose a significant and varied disease burden, with notable health disparities based on sex and ethnicity.
  • - Current viral detection methods are limited in their ability to fully capture the complexity of viral exposures, contributing to an incomplete understanding of these disparities.
  • - This study utilized a method called PepSeq to analyze viral exposure history in a pilot group of adults, revealing expected seroprevalence along with previously undocumented differences in infection rates based on gender and ethnicity.

Background: Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) comprise more than a quarter of all patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention and are at higher risk of adverse events. We sought to reexamine the optimal duration of dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) postpercutaneous coronary intervention in patients with DM.

Methods: We systematically included randomized controlled trials comparing any 2 of 1, 3, 6, and 12 months of DAPT that reported major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), net adverse clinical events (NACE), bleeding, or stent thrombosis in DM, and performed a frequentist network meta-analysis.
