High Prevalence Rates of Peri-implant mucositis and Peri-implantitis Post Dental Implantations Dictate Need for Continuous Peri-implant Maintenance.

While many clinicians are cognizant of the high survival rate of dental implants, the elevated prevalences of peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis post implant insertions may not be as well known. This underscores the need for greater awareness of the importance of continuous personal and professional peri-implant maintenance to facilitate implant success. The occurrence of peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis post implant insertions among patients ranges in studies from 46% to 63% and 19% to 23%, respectively.

Repair of Lingual Gingival Fenestrations Through the Use of a Subepithelial Connective Tissue Graft.

A gingival fenestration is a localized perforation of keratinized gingival tissue that may result in underlying bone resorption and root exposure. This case report describes treatment of mandibular lingual gingival fenestrations caused by traumatic forces from an ill-fitting removable partial denture that rested on a thin periodontal phenotype. A subepithelial connective tissue graft was used to correct these fenestrations.

Unexpected return of sensation following 4.5 years of paresthesia: case report.

Neural damage leads to a transient or persistent alteration, depending on the severity or type of injury sustained. During the last decade, many investigators reported on paresthesia related to dental implants. In this case report, the patient had presented repeatedly with swelling and suppuration, showing typical signs of peri-implantitis.

The body of knowledge that was the basis of the science and therapy of periodontics can be found in the literature of the 1950s and 60s. This information conveniently was presented in various textbooks. The evolution of research utilizing histochemistry and electron microscopy, along with disciplined clinical studies, has resulted in an exponential increase in information.

The primary responsibility of the clinician treating a patient with implant dentistry is to provide a long-term favorable prognosis. In consideration of changes in implant materials and restorative designs, familiarity with the relationship of the periimplant tissues to the implant components is essential. Maintaining healthy tissues requires understanding the influence of the intraoral bacterial flora, recognizing deviations from health, and initiating an appropriate preventive protocol.

An overview of delayed passive eruption.

The condition of delayed or altered passive eruption exists in adults when the gingival unit remains positioned on the convex prominence of the enamel rather than at or in proximity to the cementoenamel junction. Treatment protocol is based on periodontal, esthetic, and prosthetic considerations. In addition, the gingival/osseous relationship becomes important for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Considerations for single-unit esthetic implant restorations.

Single-tooth replacement in contemporary dentistry is often accomplished with an osseointegrated implant-supported restoration. To accomplish this in an esthetically acceptable manner requires a thorough course of treatment, including diagnosis, treatment planning, surgery and restorative and preventive care. This article discusses surgical considerations that are applicable before implant placement, as well as at the time of stage I and II surgery.

Case report: Langerhans cell histiocytosis associated with elevation of angiotensin-converting enzyme levels.

The authors describe a 22-year-old man with osteolytic mandibular and maxillary lesions. Biopsy substantiated the presence of Langerhans cell histiocytosis (eosinophilic granuloma). Levels of serum angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) were elevated repeatedly.

Double-blind evaluation of suprofen and aspirin in the treatment of periodontal pain.

A double-blind, randomized, parallel group, placebo-controlled study was carried out to compare the safety and efficacy of single doses of suprofen (200 mg and 400 mg) with aspirin (650 mg) and placebo in relieving pain. In patients with pain resulting from periodontal surgery, a single dose of suprofen 200 or 400 mg was significantly better than placebo in reducing pain intensity and providing pain relief. The superiority of both doses of suprofen over placebo was demonstrated in every parameter in which pain intensity or pain relief was calculated.
