Article Synopsis
  • Epithelial cells respond to sustained strains in two ways: typical stress relaxation and a unique tensioning process that increases stress levels.
  • This tensioning response is influenced by the rate of strain, with more cells exhibiting this behavior as the strain rate increases.
  • Actin remodeling plays a crucial role in this process, indicating that cell contractility helps epithelial cells adapt to environmental stress, acting as a protective mechanism.

Background And Purpose: Treatment of malignancies with chemotherapy and surgery is often associated with disease recurrence and metastasis. Immunotherapy improves cancer treatment by creating an active response against tumor antigens. Various cancer cells express a large amount of glucose-regulated protein 78 (GRP78) protein on their surface.

Key Clinical Message: Unilateral renal mucormycosis is a rare infection that should be suspected in patients with recurrent renal infections presenting nonspecific clinical features that do not respond to conventional therapies, especially in impaired immune systems due to related risk factors. Moreover, histopathological examinations should be performed to confirm the diagnosis. For treatment, the preference is that the patient is hospitalized, and surgical intervention and rapid administration of intravenous antifungals for 2-3 weeks are the treatment choices.

Background: Aim of this study was the isolation of native probiotic and determine the effect of combination of Beta Glucan and Lactobacillus rhamnosus Heriz I on White Blood Cell Counts and serum levels of IL-4and IL-12 in breast cancer women receiving Chemotherapy.

Methods: This study was randomized double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial in 30 women with breast cancer. Women in the intervention group received two 10-mg capsules of soluble 1-3,1-6, D-beta glucan and one capsule of Lactobacillus rhamnosus strain Heriz I (2 × 10 CFU) daily and placebo group received placebo during 21days, interval between two courses of chemotherapy.

Article Synopsis
  • Small bowel obstruction (SBO) is a frequent reason for acute abdominal pain in emergency settings, but a definitive diagnostic method is still unclear.
  • This systematic review evaluated 21 studies with nearly 2,000 patients to determine how accurate ultrasonography is for diagnosing SBO, using comprehensive statistical analysis.
  • The results indicate ultrasonography has a high sensitivity (93%) and good specificity (80%) for SBO diagnosis, suggesting it is a promising tool, though further global studies are needed to reinforce these findings.

Recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis (RVVC) due to fluconazole resistance in Candida albicans isolates causes a wide range of complications. A number of 63 Candida albicans isolates obtained from vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) were identified by Internal Transcribed Spacer-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (ITS-RFLP). Antifungal susceptibility testing was performed by broth microdilution method according to the CLSI protocol.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the world's most common types of malignancy. The proliferation of precancerous lesions causes this type of cancer. Two distinct pathways for CRC carcinogenesis have been identified: the conventional adenoma-carcinoma pathway and the serrated neoplasia pathway.

In this paper, a method to reduce the profile of layered carpet cloaks is proposed. We analytically prove and numerically demonstrate that using a Low Index Material (LIM), a material with a relative dielectric constant smaller than 1, in construction of carpet cloaks can remarkably reduce their profiles. Using the proposed technique, a carpet cloak consisting of alternating LIM and silicon layers is designed to provide invisibility at visible wavelengths.

Two-photon polymerization (TPP) has been widely used to create 3D micro- and nanoscale scaffolds for biological and mechanobiological studies, which often require the mechanical characterization of the TPP fabricated structures. To satisfy physiological requirements, most of the mechanical characterizations need to be conducted in liquid. However, previous characterizations of TPP fabricated structures were all conducted in air due to the limitation of conventional micro- and nanoscale mechanical testing methods.

Background & Objectives: Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) signalling pathway has been reported to be involved in metastasis and at the same time has been considered compellingly an important mediator of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Besides, EMT process is maintained by zinc-finger E-box-binding homeobox 1 (ZEB1) gene which is induced by TGF-β pathway. TGF-β has been shown to be associated with elevated microsatellite alterations at selected tetranucleotide repeats (EMAST) phenomenon, which is one of the prognostic biomarkers of colorectal cancer (CRC).

Nowadays, the development of pH-sensitive smart edible films using biopolymers and natural plant extracts (especially those rich in anthocyanins) has attracted much attention. Therefore, in this study, the intelligent edible film was produced and characterized using cassava starch and pomegranate peel powder (PPP) and the possibility of using production films to monitor the freshness of lamb meat. The smart films were prepared using different concentrations of PPP (2, 4, 6, and 8% w/w) and the solvent casting method.

We previously reported a single-cell adhesion micro tensile tester (SCAμTT) fabricated from IP-S photoresin with two-photon polymerization (TPP) for investigating the mechanics of a single cell-cell junction under defined tensile loading. A major limitation of the platform is the autofluorescence of IP-S, the photoresin for TPP fabrication, which significantly increases background signal and makes fluorescent imaging of stretched cells difficult. In this study, we report the design and fabrication of a new SCAμTT platform that mitigates autofluorescence and demonstrate its capability in imaging a single cell pair as its mutual junction is stretched.

Aims: Malignant melanoma (MM) is the most fatal skin cancer with a critical increase in the number of cases in the last decades. Recent studies have shown the antitumor potential of active biological phytochemical structures of flavonoids for the prevention and treatment of cancerous cells. In this study, two quercetin fatty acid esters (α-linolenic acid (ALA) and linoleic acid (LA)) compounds were evaluated in terms of inducing apoptotic human melanoma cells (A375) death in vitro.

Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is a prevalent infection of the genitourinary tract affecting millions of women worldwide. In the present study, the importance of virulence factors, ERG11 gene mutations, ERG11 gene expression, and plasma membrane ergosterol content for fluconazole resistance in Candida species was investigated in 200 women suspected of vulvovaginitis. Isolated Candida species were identified using the ITS-restriction fragment length polymorphism (ITS-RFLP) technique.

The assertion that a significant portion of the mammalian genome has not been translated and that non-coding RNA accounts for over half of polyadenylate RNA have received much attention. In recent years, increasing evidence proposes non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) as new regulators of various cellular processes, including cancer progression and nerve damage. Apoptosis is a type of programmed cell death critical for homeostasis and tissue development.
