Background: Martinique is the second French Region with the lowest physician-to-population ratio, which may affect waiting times for access to care.

Objectives: To assess (i) factors influencing waiting times from diagnosis to cancer-related treatments in breast cancer women in Martinique, and (ii) the impact of waiting times on patients' survival.

Study Design: Retrospective observational study.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzes breast cancer survival in women from Martinique between 2008-2017, focusing on various prognostic factors such as demographics, cancer stage, and hormone receptor status.
  • A total of 1,708 patients were included, revealing a median age of 57 years, with 20.9% diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) and one-year overall survival (OS) rates of 95.2%, dropping to 80.1% at five years.
  • The findings highlight that metastatic disease, TNBC, HR+/HER2- status, and age over 75 significantly increase the risk of death, marking it as a crucial study for understanding breast cancer outcomes in this region.

Once his specialty has been chosen, and according to his ranking, the new resident in oncology decides on the subdivision in which he wishes to be among the 28 existing subdivisions. Two concern overseas departments and territories: the Antilles-Guyana subdivision and the Indian Ocean subdivision. The oncology residency has its own particularities because of the demographic characteristics and epidemiology of cancers in these areas, but also because of a particular organization of care and university teaching.

Background: Cooperation in public health and in oncology in particular, is currently a major issue for the island of Martinique, given its geopolitical position in the Caribbean region. The region of Martinique shares certain public health problems with other countries of the Caribbean, notably in terms of diagnostic and therapeutic management of patients with cancer. We present here a roadmap of cooperation priorities and activities in cancer surveillance and oncology in Martinique.

Background: In Martinique, prostate cancer (Pca) incidence rates are nowadays among the highest worldwide with a high incidence of early-onset and familial forms. Despite the demonstration of a strong familial component, identification of the genetic basis for hereditary Pca is challenging. The HOXB13 germline variant G84E (rs138213197) was described in men of European descent with Pca risk.

Population-based cancer registries (PBCR) participate in epidemiological surveillance and in the evaluation of cancer types by enabling analysis of incidence and survival data over time. The aim of this study was to examine overall survival (OS) in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) by analyzing data from the Martinique population-based cancer registry between 1993 and 2012. All colorectal cancer cases diagnosed in Martinique between 1993 and 2012 were included.

Background: Cancer indicators are essential information for cancer surveillance and cancer research strategy development. The Martinique Cancer Registry (MCR) is a population-based cancer Registry (PBCR) that has been recording cancer data since its creation in 1981. This article provides cancer incidence and mortality data for all cancers and for major tumor sites.

Background: Martinique has one of the highest incidences of prostate cancer (PCa) worldwide. We analysed overall survival (OS) among patients with PCa in Martinique, using data from a population-based cancer registry between 2005 and 2014.

Methods: The log-rank test was used to assess the statistical differences between survival curves according to age at diagnosis, risk of disease progression including Gleason score, stage at diagnosis and Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA).

Article Synopsis
  • The French West-Indies have the highest rates of prostate cancer incidence and mortality, making it crucial to analyze diagnostic and treatment methods using population-based cancer registry data.
  • A study conducted in Martinique reviewed records of 452 prostate cancer patients diagnosed in 2013, focusing on socio-demographic factors, diagnosis conditions, and treatment patterns.
  • Findings revealed that most patients were diagnosed at a mean age of 67, with many tumors localized, and a significant percentage received treatment, highlighting the need for improved cancer management strategies in the Caribbean.

Purpose: Recording cancer data in cancer registries is essential for producing reliable population-based data for service planning, monitoring and evaluation. Prostate cancer (PCa) remains the most frequent type of cancer in terms of incidence and mortality in men in the Caribbean. The quality of life PCa cohort will assess quality of life and patient outcomes in Martinique using a digital platform for patient-reported outcome measures.

Purpose: Radiotherapy is a common adjuvant treatment of breast cancer. Acute radiation-induced dermatitis is a frequent side effect. We hypothesized whether it is possible to capture the increase of local temperature as a surrogate of the inflammatory state induced by radiotherapy.

Background: We aimed to describe incidence and mortality from colorectal cancer, and temporal trends between 1982 and 2011 in Martinique (French West-Indies).

Methods: This was a descriptive, longitudinal, observational study based on data from the Martinique cancer registry. The study included all incident cases of colorectal cancer between 1982 and 2011.

Purpose: Prostate cancer is the most frequent malignancy in African-Caribbean men, a population sharing common genetic traits with African-American (AA) but presenting also genomic and epidemiologic specificities. Despite socioeconomic disparities with French mainland, all patients were treated within the French state-financed equal-access health care system. In this study, we report biochemical outcomes of patients treated by brachytherapy in our department from 2005 to 2014 in an African-Caribbean population.

Monitoring and controlling respiratory motion is a challenge for the accuracy and safety of therapeutic irradiation of thoracic tumors. Various commercial systems based on the monitoring of internal or external surrogates have been developed but remain costly. In this article we describe and validate Madibreast, an in-house-made respiratory monitoring and processing device based on optical tracking of external markers.

Background: Prostate cancer incidence in the African-Caribbean population ranks among the highest worldwide. We aim to evaluate the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) kinetics after brachytherapy, which so far remains unknown in this population.

Methods And Materials: From 2005 to 2013, 371 patients received (125)I brachytherapy of 145 Gy for early-stage prostate cancer.

Background: In Martinique, prostate cancer incidence rates have been increasing since the 1980s and are actually among the highest worldwide. Exposure to lifestyle (changes in dietary habits), environmental factors (exposure to organochlorine pesticides) and modifications in diagnostic and screening procedures, are favored etiological hypotheses. The aim of the present study is to describe and interpret prostate cancer incidence trends over the past 25 years (1981-2005) in Martinique.

Unlabelled: The spread of gastric adenocarcinoma may follow three main patterns: hematogenic, lymphatic and intraperitoneal. A GTV should be considered in preoperative or exclusive radiation therapy. After non-radical surgery, a "residual GTV" will be defined with the help of the surgeon.

A pilot cervix cancer screening is organized in Martinique since 1991, as part of the programmes of the Fonds National de Prévention d'Education et d'Information Sanitaire of CNAMTS. Evaluation of the programme is conducted by the cancer registry, which includes the measurement of the impact, quality of the Pap smear test, quality of action and efficiency of the programme. Evaluation is a key part that allows to manage the screening programme.
