Delayed graft function (DGF) increases morbidity and mortality in kidney transplant recipients. Operative parameters, including hemodynamic manipulation through vasopressors and fluids, can impact perfusion to the newly transplanted kidney and influence DGF incidence. We analyzed intraoperative time-series data in 5-minute intervals from kidney transplant recipient operations (N = 545) in conjunction with pretransplant characteristics and postsurgical outcomes, including DGF incidence, 60-day creatinine, and graft survival.

In this study, the number of semantic associates in Deese-Roediger-McDermott (DRM) lists was varied from 4 to 14 in a modified Sternberg paradigm. The false alarm (FA) and correct rejection (CR) reaction time (RT)/memory-set size (MSS) functions of critical lures showed a cross-over interaction at approximately MSS 7, suggesting a reversal of the relative dominance between these two responses to the critical lure at this point and also indicating the location of the boundary between the sub- and supraspan MSS. For the subspan lists, FA to critical lures was slower than CR, suggesting a slow, strategic mechanism driving the false memory.

The Arc (anoxic redox control) two-component signal transduction system, consisting of the ArcB sensor kinase and the ArcA response regulator, allows adaptive responses of Escherichia coli to changes of O(2) availability. The arcA gene was previously known as the dye gene because null mutants were growth sensitive to the photosensitizer redox dyes toluidine blue and methylene blue, a phenotype whose molecular basis still remains elusive. In this study we report that the toluidine blue O (TBO) effect on the arc mutants is light independent and observed only during aerobic growth conditions.

Dengue virus universal and dengue serotype 1 to 4, fluorogenic probe hydrolysis (TaqMan), reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction assays were developed for screening and serotype identification of infected mosquito vectors and human sera using a field-deployable, fluorometric thermocycler. Dengue universal and dengue 1 to 4 serotype assay in vitro sensitivity and specificity results were 100% concordant when tested with total nucleic acid extracts of multiple strains of dengue serotype 1 to 4, yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis, West Nile, and St. Louis encephalitis viruses.

Several rhizobial strains were isolated from Phaseolus coccineus root nodules and were determined to be Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar phaseoli strains after reinfection of the same host plant. These strains were characterized by cultural procedures (growth on different carbon sources and intrinsic antibiotic resistance) and electrophoretic procedures (sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of total proteins). Our results showed that these rhizobia are very similar to each other, especially in their electrophoretic protein banding patterns, suggesting that they might belong to isolated populations.

Cytochrome c and cytochrome oxidase, in bovine heart submitochondrial particles and in their purified forms, were transferred to a ternary system that contained phospholipids (10 mg/ml toluene), the apolar solvent toluene, and water at concentrations of 13-15 microliters (high water) and 3 microliters (low water) per milliliter of toluene. When the enzymes were transferred back to an all water system, they exhibited full catalytic capacity. A method that allows the transfer of spores, bacteria and yeasts into a ternary system composed of toluene, phospholipids and low amounts of water is described. Initially an emulsion is formed by sonication of cells suspended in water in presence of toluene and phospholipids. Inhibition of 11 beta-hydroxylase activity was observed to be due to the interaction of adriamycin with adrenal cortex mitochondria. The inhibition of the enzyme was uncompetitive, with an apparent Ki of 100 microM, and was dependent upon the concentration of the drug and the time of incubation. Adriamycin increased the oxygen consumption of these mitochondria.

The presence and clinical significance of enterotoxins produced by Campylobacter jejuni were investigated.
