Article Synopsis
  • - The study examined how melatonin could protect male rats from liver and kidney damage caused by lead exposure, using three groups: control, lead-treated, and lead plus melatonin for 30 days.
  • - Results showed that lead treatment increased harmful lipid peroxidation and decreased important antioxidant levels and indicators of cellular health, leading to severe organ damage.
  • - Co-treatment with melatonin significantly reduced these harmful effects and restored the health of the liver and kidneys, suggesting that melatonin might be beneficial in reducing lead-induced oxidative damage.

Oxidative stress is a likely molecular mechanism in lead neurotoxicity. Considering the antioxidant properties of melatonin, this study investigated the neuroprotective potential of melatonin in the hippocampus and corpus striatum of rats treated with lead. Three groups of male rats (control, lead acetate-treated [100 mg/kg], and lead acetate plus melatonin [10 mg/kg] for 21 consecutive days) were used.
