Bile Acid Diarrhea (BAD) is a common cause of chronic diarrhea, often accompanied by urgency, occasional fecal incontinence, abdominal pain, and fatigue. A nationwide survey has shown limited awareness of BAD within the Italian medical community, prompting a panel of experts to develop a Position Paper that outlines the most practical and cost-saving diagnostic investigations and treatments for this frequently overlooked condition. The document provides an overview of the epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, and classification of the different types of Bile Acid Diarrhea (BAD).

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examined the real-world effects of stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) in patients with stage I non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), focusing on acute toxicity and 90-day mortality rates among 7,279 patients treated between 2017 and 2021.
  • - Acute toxicity occurred in 3.8% of patients, while 90-day mortality was at 1.7%, with certain factors like age, sex, and lung function impacting these outcomes.
  • - The findings suggest that SBRT has a low rate of acute toxicity and acceptable mortality, with developed prediction models aiding in identifying patients at higher risk for adverse effects.

Current online adaptive radiotherapy (oART) workflows require dedicated equipment. Our aim was to develop and implement an oART workflow for a C-arm linac which can be performed using standard clinically available tools. A workflow was successfully developed and implemented.

Background: MRI-guidance may aid better discrimination between Organs at Risk (OARs) and target volumes in proximity of the mediastinum. We report the first clinical experiences with Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT) of (ultra)central lung tumours on a 1.5 T MR-linac.

Introduction: Unaccompanied refugee minors (URMs) are at increased risk of developing mental health problems, such as symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. In addition, URMs face several barriers to mental health care. Few studies have evaluated trauma-focused interventions for URMs that target these issues.

The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to provide an overview of existing controlled trials focusing on the impact of multiple family therapy (MFT) on mental health problems and family functioning, and to examine the efficacy of MFT. Relevant studies were selected following a screening of 3376 studies identified by a systematic search of seven databases. The following data were extracted: participant characteristics, program characteristics, study characteristics, and information of mental health problems and/or family functioning.

Introduction: Chemoradiotherapy (CRT) is the standard of care in inoperable non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients, favoring concurrent (cCRT) over sequential CRT (seqCRT), with adjuvant immunotherapy in responders. Elderly and frail NSCLC patients have generally been excluded from trials in the past. In elderly patients however, the higher treatment related morbidity of cCRT, may outweigh the possible lower tumor control of seqCRT.

Background: This study evaluated the feasibility of a short-term, multimodal trauma-focused treatment approach adapted specifically for unaccompanied refugee minors (URMs) in the Netherlands. This approach aims to overcome barriers to mental health care and to reduce symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression.

Methods: An uncontrolled study was conducted, evaluating the main request for help, treatment integrity and feasibility, and the course of symptoms of PTSD (Children's Revised Impact of Event Scale-13) and depression (Patient Health Questionnaire modified for Adolescents).

This study evaluated the feasibility of Family Empowerment (FAME), a preventive multifamily program for asylum seeker families in the Netherlands. FAME aims to reinforce the parent-child relationship, family functioning, and social support. We used an uncontrolled pre-test-post-test design, embedded in a mixed-methods approach.

The aim of this study was to evaluate music therapy (MT), in conjunction with standard care, as a complementary option for asthma management in pediatric patients. 173 children were randomly assigned to one of three groups: 1) Music: a single individualized MT session along with a recorder and journal with instructions for home use; 2) Music Plus: weekly group MT sessions along with a recorder and journal for home use; or 3) Control: standard of care. Primary endpoints included pulmonary function tests (FEV1, FVC, FEF25-75, PEF), hospitalizations, ER visits, missed school days, and quality of life (Juniper).

Background: Families applying for asylum have often experienced multiple potentially traumatic events and continue to face stressors during their resettlement. Studies have indicated that traumatic events can negatively impact parenting behaviour and child development. A secondary preventive multi-family intervention programme, called Family Empowerment, was developed.

Radiotherapy remains the cornerstone of curative treatment for inoperable locally advanced lung cancer, given concomitantly with platinum-based chemotherapy. With poor overall survival, research efforts continue to explore whether integration of advanced radiation techniques will assist safe treatment intensification with the potential for improving outcomes. One advance is the integration of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the treatment pathway, providing anatomical and functional information with excellent soft tissue contrast without exposure of the patient to radiation.

Introduction: Glioblastoma multiforme is the most common and aggressive primary brain tumor. Valproate has been used as an anti-epileptic drug and mood stabilizer for decades. Recently, it was found to inhibit the proliferation of various cancers including glioblastoma multiforme.

We investigated the etiology, incidence, and complications of patients with mandibular fracture in Amsterdam for a period of 10 years. Between January 2000 and January 2009, 213 patients with surgically treated mandibular fracture were identified. Two hundred thirteen patients were included with a mean age of 32.

Background: Radiotherapy (RT) plus concomitant and adjuvant temozolomide (TMZ) is now the standard of care for patients with newly diagnosed glioblastoma. The occurrence of pseudo-progression directly after RT is a recognized phenomenon, but to the authors' knowledge its incidence after combined RT/TMZ is unknown. The occurrence of early pseudo-progression was retrospectively assessed in a cohort of malignant glioma patients treated with RT/TMZ.

Three women aged 74, 59 and 36 years, had chronic complaints of abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, 1 to 8 years after radiotherapy for pelvic malignancies. Mechanical ileus due to fibrotic adhesions was found to be the cause; all three patients recovered after one or more operations. The prevalence of chronic radiation injury correlates with both radiation factors (volume) and patient characteristics.

Objective: To describe the learning curve in prostate seed implantation, according to the experience with two groups of 100 patients.

Material And Methods: A perineal, ultrasound-guided implantation technique with manual afterloading was used in all patients. Of a total of 255 patients treated over the period 1989 through 1998, the results of the first hundred patients were compared in relation to the last hundred patients.

The craniopharyngioma is a histologically benign tumour, mainly occurring in childhood. Neurosurgical treatment, in some of these patients in combination with external radiotherapy, results in a fair prognosis for children with craniopharyngioma. However, the central localisation of this tumour in the brain, damage of surrounding structures due to tumour growth, as well as the adverse effects of treatment will result in substantial morbidity in many patients.

Between August 1989 and July 1992 a total of 22 patients (64 treatments) with inoperable or recurrent deep seated pelvic tumours were treated with regional hyperthermia and radiotherapy. The 70 Mhz Coaxial TEM applicator with its characteristic open waterbolus was used as heating device. The main objective of this pilot study was to evaluate the feasibility, toxicity and temperature data.

Alcohol dehydrogenases from various animal and plant sources were purified by a common procedure which employed DEAE, Sephadex-G100 and affinity chromatographies. The procedure achieves an 80-130 fold purification for animal enzymes. However, only a 5-15 fold purification for plant enzymes was attained because of the instability of these enzymes.
