Background: This is the first study to report both cortical and trabecular bone evaluation of mandibles in bruxers, within the knowledge of the authors. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of bruxism on both the cortical and the trabecular bone in antegonial and gonial regions of the mandible, which is the attachment of the masticatory muscles, by using panoramic radiographic images.

Methods: In this study, the data of 65 bruxer (31 female, 34 male) and 71 non-bruxer (37 female, 34 male) young adult patients (20-30 years) were evaluated.

Objective: Hemorrhoidal disease is a very common entity in the general population; however, the therapeutic approaches to hemorrhoids remain controversial. The choice of treatment method depends on the grade of the hemorrhoid as well as the experience of the surgeon. The Whitehead hemorrhoidectomy procedure is often applied for grade IV hemorrhoids.

Background: The rate of conversion to open surgery is high in laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) after Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreotocography (ERCP). The present study aimed to evaluate the risk factors associated with the conversion to open cholecystectomy and minimize the rate of conversion to open surgery.

Methods: A total of 157 patients admitted to the Ondokuz Mayıs University Medical Faculty Hospital due to cholelithiasis and choledocholithiasis between January 2002 and December 2012, and they receiving laparoscopic cholecystectomy were included in the study.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the factors affecting survival in patients who underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy for periampullary cancers and to discuss the outcomes of our findings.

Material And Methods: This retrospective study included 79 patients who underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy for periampullary cancers between September 1987 and October 2011 in the Department of General Surgery at Ondokuz Mayis University School of Medicine. The factors of age, tumor localization, tumor size, lymphovascular invasion, status of lymph node metastasis, tumor differentiation, preoperative CA 19-9 levels, preoperative total bilirubin levels, preoperative albumin levels, and preoperative biliary drainage were investigated to determine their influence on survival.

Background: Nerve injury is one of the specific complications of thyroid surgery despite many advances in surgical technique. The recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) and the external branch of superior laryngeal nerve are the nerves at risk during thyroid surgery (1). Morbidity related to recurrent laryngeal nerve injury varies from changes in voice quality to severe dyspnea requiring tracheal intubation or tracheostomy.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how transaminase levels relate to the severity of blunt liver trauma (BLT) and their effectiveness in deciding between surgical and non-operative treatment.
  • Data from 44 patients were analyzed using various statistical methods, revealing that as transaminase levels increase, their ability to predict liver injury and inform treatment decisions improves significantly.
  • Results showed that transaminases are more accurate than focused abdominal sonography (FAST) for determining the necessity of surgery in BLT cases, indicating their potential as a reliable marker in trauma care.

Objectives: The olive leaf extract (OLext) is known to possess many biological properties including a powerful antioxidant. This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of postoperative nutrition with OLext and glutamine on bacterial translocation (BT) and liver damage in obstructive jaundice.

Materials And Methods: Totally, 50 rats were randomly divided into the five groups of 10 each.

Objective: Helicobacter pylori (HP) is the world's most common infectious agent. Despite conventional therapy consisting of proton pump inhibitor (PPI), amoxicillin (AMO) and clarithromycin (CLA), approximately half of the patients remain infected. We compared the PPI-based triple therapy with quadruple treatment (BPMT) including bismuth citrate (BS), PPI, metronidazole (MET) and tetracycline (TET).

A paraganglioma is a rare tumor that develops out of extra-adrenal chromaffin cells and pheochromocytomas originating from the adrenal medulla. Early diagnosis and surgical planning are crucial, since the tumor secretes catecholamine and is adjacent to large vessels in the abdomen. Furthermore, since complete resection improves the prognosis, we recommend a meticulous surgical technique.

This study investigated the effects of Gentacoll implants on healing in patients (n = 44) undergoing modified radical mastectomy and axillary dissection. Group I, the Gentacoll group (n = 22), underwent surgery followed by insertion of 10 × 10 × 0.5 cm Gentacoll implants (280 mg collagen sponge plus 200 mg gentamicin sulphate) into the axillary area and under the flap area of the breast before wound closure.
