Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how allergic fungal rhinosinusitis (AFRS) affects the length of the anterior ethmoid artery to skull base (AEA-SB) compared to chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP), which is important for surgical safety during endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS).
  • A retrospective chart review analyzed 21 patients each from AFRS and CRSwNP groups, finding that the AFRS group was younger and had a significantly longer AEA-SB length, while no major differences were detected in other anatomical variations.
  • The conclusion stresses that the identified anatomical differences should be considered during preoperative planning for ESS in AFRS patients to minimize the risk of AEA injury.

Introduction: Chemical mass casualty incidents (MCIs) pose a substantial threat to public health and safety, with the capacity to overwhelm healthcare infrastructure and create societal disorder. Computer simulation systems are becoming an established mechanism to validate these plans due to their versatility, cost-effectiveness and lower susceptibility to ethical problems.

Methods: We created a computer simulation model of an urban subway sarin attack analogous to the 1995 Tokyo sarin incident.

Objective: This article outlines a scalable system developed by the All of Us Research Program's Genetic Counseling Resource to vet a large database of healthcare resources for supporting participants with health-related DNA results.

Materials And Methods: After a literature review of established evaluation frameworks for health resources, we created SONAR, a 10-item framework and grading scale for health-related participant-facing resources. SONAR was used to review clinical resources that could be shared with participants during genetic counseling.

Introduction: Type 4 posterior glottic stenosis and bilateral vocal fold paralysis are clinically challenging causes of bilateral vocal fold immobility (BVFI) that result in glottic airway obstruction. Established procedures for BVFI typically worsen dysphonia. We hypothesize the use of thyroarytenoid myomectomy (TAM) in the setting of BVFI will improve dyspnea with decreased detriment to voice.

In the Anthropocene, intensifying ecological disturbances pose significant challenges to our predictive capabilities for ecosystem responses. Macroecology-which focuses on emergent statistical patterns in ecological systems-unveils consistent regularities in the organization of biodiversity and ecosystems. These regularities appear in terms of abundance, body size, geographical range, species interaction networks, or the flux of matter and energy.

The end-Permian mass extinction was the most severe ecological event during the Phanerozoic and has long been presumed contemporaneous across terrestrial and marine realms with global environmental deterioration triggered by the Siberian Traps Large Igneous Province. We present high-precision zircon U-Pb geochronology by the chemical abrasion-isotope dilution-thermal ionization mass spectrometry technique on tuffs from terrestrial to transitional coastal settings in Southwest China, which reveals a protracted collapse of the Cathaysian rainforest beginning after the onset of the end-Permian marine extinction. Integrated with high-resolution geochronology from coeval successions, our results suggest that the terrestrial extinction occurred diachronously with latitude, beginning at high latitudes during the late Changhsingian and progressing to the tropics by the early Induan, spanning a duration of nearly 1 million years.

Background: Tobacco-related disparities are a leading contributor to health inequities among marginalized communities. Lack of support from health professionals is one of the most cited barriers to tobacco cessation reported by these communities. Improving the proficiencies with which health professionals incorporate social and cultural influences into therapeutic interactions has the potential to address this critical barrier.

Genetic counseling graduate programs largely recommend that prospective applicants shadow or gain exposure to genetic counselors (GC) as a means of developing insight into the profession. However, prospective students have cited this need to shadow genetic counselors as harder to access in comparison to other prerequisites. The GC Immersive (GCI) at Color was created as a no-cost, remote, self-paced professional exploration program designed to provide resources and live interaction with a team of genetic counselors to increase accessibility to GC exposure and enhance the competitiveness of underrepresented GC candidates.

Computed tomography (CT) scan-based three-dimensional (3D) modeling operative technology has been shown to improve upon results of manual total knee arthroplasties (TKAs). Although there are many reports on superior precision of this CT-based technology, there has been continuing interest regarding extended clinical outcomes. The purpose of this study was to compare their clinical outcomes with manual TKAs at approximately 3-year follow-up.

Article Synopsis
  • Multi-cancer gene panels for hereditary cancer syndromes are commonly ordered by genetic counselors, often based on clinical indications and patient requests rather than financial factors.
  • Despite the availability of hereditary cancer panels, many institutions lack formal protocols for discussing these options with patients.
  • Most genetic counselors believe that insurance reimbursement is more reliable for HCPs compared to genetic counseling, as patients are also perceived to be more willing to pay for HCPs than for counseling services.

Fourth branchial cleft anomalies are an exceptionally rare cause of recurrent neck mass in pediatric and adult patients. In this report, we present a case of an infected fourth branchial cleft cyst in a 20-year-old woman that presented with recurrent throat pain and deep neck abscesses. After undergoing repeated incision and drainage procedures, the patient underwent definitive management with direct laryngoscopy, ablation of the left pyriform sinus tract, left hemithyroidectomy, and excision of the branchial anomaly without evidence of recurrence.

Recruitment of minority participants to clinical trials, especially studies without therapeutic intent, has been historically challenging. This study describes barriers to and successes of recruitment and retention strategies to dietary studies. A flaxseed study was conducted in healthy, postmenopausal women of African ancestry (AA) and European ancestry (EA) to assess associations between gut microbial community composition and host metabolism (NCT01698294).

Background: Bladder cancer is one of the top 10 most common cancers in the United States. Most bladder cancers (70%-80%) are diagnosed at early stages as non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC), which can be removed surgically. However, 50% to 80% of NMIBC cases recur within 5 years, and 15% to 30% progress with poor survival.

Leaves are the most abundant and visible plant organ, both in the modern world and the fossil record. Identifying foliage to the correct plant family based on leaf architecture is a fundamental botanical skill that is also critical for isolated fossil leaves, which often, especially in the Cenozoic, represent extinct genera and species from extant families. Resources focused on leaf identification are remarkably scarce; however, the situation has improved due to the recent proliferation of digitized herbarium material, live-plant identification applications, and online collections of cleared and fossil leaf images.

Constraining patterns of growth using directly observable and quantifiable characteristics can reveal a wealth of information regarding the biology of the Ediacara Biota - the oldest macroscopic, complex community forming organisms in the fossil record. However, these rely on individuals captured at an instant in time at various growth stages, and so different interpretations can be derived from the same material. Here we leverage newly discovered and well-preserved Sprigg 1947 from South Australia, combined with hundreds of previously described specimens, to test competing hypotheses for the location of module addition.

The Siberian Traps large igneous province (STLIP) is commonly invoked as the primary driver of global environmental changes that triggered the end-Permian mass extinction (EPME). Here, we explore the contributions of coeval felsic volcanism to end-Permian environmental changes. We report evidence of extreme Cu enrichment in the EPME interval in South China.

Unlabelled: Despite remarkable progress, tobacco control efforts are not equitably distributed, and tobacco-related disparities continue to contribute to significant health disparities. Our premise in this commentary is that Intersectionality can serve as a productive analytical framework for examining tobacco-related disparities across and within multiple marginalized populations. Intersectionality is a theoretical framework for understanding the multiple interlocking societal systems that bestow privilege and oppression and is increasingly being to the study of health inequities.

The Genetic Counselor SARS-CoV-2 Impact Survey (GCSIS) describes the impact of the pandemic on genetic counselors and genetic counseling services. With this information, the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) can better: (1) support advocacy and access efforts for genetic counseling services at both federal- and state-level; (2) promote effective billing and reimbursement for genetic counseling services provided via telemedicine; and (3) make decisions about how to best support genetic counselors. The survey was hosted on a novel data collection and analysis platform from LunaDNA and was open to all genetic counselors (n = 5,531 based on professional society membership).

The Ediacara Biota preserves the oldest fossil evidence of abundant, complex metazoans. Despite their significance, assigning individual taxa to specific phylogenetic groups has proved problematic. To better understand these forms, we identify developmentally controlled characters in representative taxa from the Ediacaran White Sea assemblage and compare them with the regulatory tools underlying similar traits in modern organisms.
