Effects of metabolic syndrome on jawbones and bone metabolic markers in sucrose-fed rats.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of metabolic syndrome (MetS) on bone mineral density (BMD) and microstructure of jawbones, and circulating bone metabolic markers. MetS was induced in male Wistar rats by a 16-week high-sucrose drinking water diet. Mandibles were analyzed for BMD and microstructure by standard radiographs and X-ray diffraction.

The effects of conscious sedation with nitrous oxide/oxygen on cognitive functions.

Background/aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of conscious sedation with 40% nitrous oxide/oxygen (N2O/O2) on cognitive functions.

Materials And Methods: Forty dental patients referred to the sedation unit at Gazi University Faculty of Dentistry Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery received a combination of 40% N2O/O2 inhalation for conscious sedation. Psychometric tests were applied three times: before sedation, during sedation, and at the end of the recovery, for assessing cognitive functions.

Effects of metabolic syndrome on masseter muscle of male Wistar rats.

The aim of this study was to investigate the association between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and the metabolic indicators of masticatory muscles in an animal model. A total of 16 male Wistar rats were used. To induce MetS, 10 rats were fed with standard rat chow and 32% sucrose solution ad libitum for 16 wk.

Reconstruction of total maxillectomy defect with implant-retained obturator prosthesis.

Total maxillectomy is a relatively uncommon surgical procedure. Lack of support, retention and stability are common prosthodontic treatment problems for patients who have had a maxillectomy. This clinical report describes the prosthodontic management of a patient treated for plasmacytoma who required a bilateral maxillectomy after the radiotherapy.

Selenium combined with vitamin E and vitamin C restores structural alterations of bones in heparin-induced osteoporosis.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of heparin on osteoporosis initiation, and the effect of selenium plus vitamins E and C, and the sole combination of vitamins E and C on the progress of osteoporosis induced by heparin through histologic means. Adult female New Zealand white rabbits were divided into three experimental and three control groups. The experimental rabbits were injected with 1000 IU/kg/day heparin (Liquemine) for 4 weeks.
