Our objectives were to describe the confirmed bacteriological diagnosis of mastitis pathogens cultured from cases of nonsevere clinical mastitis (CM) identified as gram-positive (GP) using on-farm culture and to compare differences in bacteriological cure (BC) based on antimicrobial (AM) therapy. Cows that developed nonsevere CM in a single quarter were enrolled in a randomized clinical trial based on microbial growth on GP selective agars. Cows were randomly assigned to receive a once-daily intramammary treatment: 3 d hetacillin (n = 69), 3 d ceftiofur (n = 69), 8 d ceftiofur (n = 70), or to a nontreated group (n = 32).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThird-generation cephalosporins such as ceftiofur are critically important antibiotics because human pathogens with resistance to these drugs contribute to high mortality rates. These antibiotics are also frequently given to dairy cattle for treating infections, emphasizing the critical role they play in both human and veterinary medicine. To investigate the effect of intramuscular ceftiofur treatment on the concentration of resistant bacteria in the gut, we focused on cows with metritis, a common bacterial infection that frequently requires antibiotic intervention.

Duplicate quarter milk samples were collected from eligible quarters of cows enrolled in a randomized clinical trial, cultured in a university laboratory, and identified using MALDI-TOF. Etiologies were grouped by genus as species (n = 11), species (n = 44), non-aureus species (n = 39), or species (n = 25).

View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Resistance exercise (RE) stimulates collagen synthesis in skeletal muscle and tendon but there is limited and equivocal evidence regarding an effect of collagen supplementation and exercise on collagen synthesis. Furthermore, it is not known if a dose-response exists regarding the effect of hydrolyzed collagen (HC) ingestion and RE on collagen synthesis.
Objective: To determine the HC dose-response effect on collagen synthesis after high-intensity RE in resistance-trained young men.
Background: Intramammary (IMM) ceftiofur treatment is commonly used in dairy farms to prevent mastitis, though its impact on the cattle gut microbiome and selection of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has not been elucidated. Herein, we enrolled 40 dairy (Holstein) cows at the end of the lactation phase for dry-cow therapy: 20 were treated with IMM ceftiofur (Spectramast®DC) and a non-antibiotic internal teat sealant (bismuth subnitrate) and 20 (controls) received only bismuth subnitrate. Fecal grab samples were collected before and after treatment (weeks 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, and 9) for bacterial quantification and metagenomic next-generation sequencing.

The objectives were to provide guidance on which genetic markers could potentially be used as part of future practice in soccer and to provide direction for future research in this area. The most compelling evidence identified six genetic polymorphisms to be associated with soccer athlete status ( I/D; rs1815739; rs699; rs1049434; rs2070744; rs4253778), six with physical performance ( rs1815739; rs17602729; rs6265; rs2070739; rs12722; rs2070744), and seven with injury risk ( rs1815739; rs2857656; rs1800012; rs12722; rs2289360; rs1800795; rs679620).

The Gly allele of the Gly482Ser rs8192678 polymorphism has been associated with endurance athlete status and favourable aerobic training adaptations. However, the association of this polymorphism with performance amongst long-distance runners remains unclear.

However, it is highly likely that the genetic influence on elite status is polygenic due to the interaction of multiple genes. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate whether polygenic profiles of elite rugby athletes differed from non-athletes utilising 13 genetic polymorphisms previously associated with tendon/ligament injury.

Methods: Thirty untrained, healthy, young men completed a cycling test to exhaustion to determine peak oxygen uptake (V̇O), and a knee extension (KE) maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) of the right leg before and after four weeks' supervised RT (four sets of 10 repetitions at 80% single repetition maximum unilateral KE exercise, three times weekly) and four weeks' supervised END (30 min combined continuous/interval cycling, three times weekly), separated by a three-week washout phase. Participants were genotyped for the ACTN3 rs1815739, NOS3 rs2070744 and VEGFA rs2010963 SNPs.

Objective: Concussions are common match injuries in elite rugby, and reports exist of reduced cognitive function and long-term health consequences that can interrupt or end a playing career and produce continued ill health. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between elite rugby status and 8 concussion-associated risk polymorphisms. We hypothesized that concussion-associated risk genotypes and alleles would be underrepresented in elite rugby athletes compared with nonathletes.
