Understanding how modification of molecular structures changes the thermochemistry of H atom uptake can provide design criteria for the formation of highly active catalysts for reductive transformations. Herein, we describe the effect of doping an atomically precise polyoxotungstate with vanadium on proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reactivity. The Lindqvist-type polyoxotungstate [WO] displays reversible redox chemistry, which was found to be unchanged in the presence of acid, indicating an inability to couple reduction with protonation.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFIn this first systematic investigation of mechanochemical polyoxometalate (POM) reduction, (TBA)[PMoO] was reacted with equiv of lithium metal ( = 1-24) to generate products which were shown to be mixtures of electron-rich species. FTIR analysis revealed the lengthening/weakening of terminal Mo═O bonds with increasing levels of reduction, while EXAFS spectra indicated the onset of Mo-Mo bond formation at ∼ 8 and a significant structural change at > 12. Successive Mo reductions were monitored by XANES and XPS, and at = 24, results were consistent with the formation of at least one Mo-Mo bonded {Mo} triad together with Mo.

Methods: A retrospective study investigating 306 UM patients treated with fSRT (N=153) by the Rotterdam Ocular Melanoma Study group (ROMS), The Netherlands, between 1999-2014 or with PBR (N=153) at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, Bebington, United Kingdom, between 1993-2014. The tumours treated with fSRT were matched with tumours treated with PBR based on sex, left or right eye, TNM classification, posterior margin ≤ or > 3mm of the fovea and of the optic disc.
Amphiphilic polyoxometalate (POM) surfactants were prepared by covalently grafting double hydrophobic tails with chain lengths C12H25, C14H29, C16H33 or C18H37 onto the lacunary Wells-Dawson {P2W17O61} headgroup. The critical micelle concentrations (CMCs) of these novel surfactants in aqueous solutions were determined by conductivity, and micelle formation was studied by small angle neutron scattering (SANS). Surprisingly, the amphiphiles with longer hydrophobic tails tend to form less elongated and more globular micelles in water.

We use a quantitative analysis of epifluorescence to determine the number of eGFP molecules in a nondestructive way, and integrated over the cell we find 10 to 10 molecules. Based on the measured number of eGFP tagged cyclin B1 proteins, knowledge of cyclin B1 dynamics through the cell cycle, and the cell morphology, we identify the stages of cells in the cell cycle.

POMs with attached hydrocarbon chains show amphiphilic behaviour so we hypothesised that mixtures of a nonionic surfactant and anionic surfactants with a polyoxometalate cluster as headgroup would form mixed micelles, giving control of the POM density in the micelle, and which would differ in size and shape from micelles formed by the individual surfactants. Due to the high charge and large size of the POM, we suggested that these would be nonideal mixtures due to the complex interactions between the two types of surfactants.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFTo find new anti-cancer drug therapies, we wanted to exploit homeostatic vulnerabilities within Tuberous Sclerosis Complex 2 (TSC2)-deficient cells with mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) hyperactivity. We show that nelfinavir and mefloquine synergize to selectively evoke a cytotoxic response in TSC2-deficient cell lines with mTORC1 hyperactivity. We optimize the concentrations of nelfinavir and mefloquine to a clinically viable range that kill cells that lack TSC2, while wild-type cells tolerate treatment.
