The activity of natural radionuclides is unevenly distributed across the Earth's crust, with certain areas exhibiting significantly higher levels than others, known as High Background Radiation Areas (HBRAs). This study presents a statistical analysis of reported activity values for coastal sands globally. Through this statistical analysis, costal sands were classified into four categories based on their activity levels, providing a standardized framework to compare the natural radioactivity of these sands.

Article Synopsis
  • This study evaluated the effectiveness of ultra-low-dose chest CT (uLDCT) compared to standard low-dose chest CT (LDCT) in detecting fungal infections in immunocompromised patients.
  • One hundred patients underwent both types of scans, and three radiologists assessed the image quality and confidence in finding major and minor fungal infection signs.
  • The results showed uLDCT achieved high accuracy for detecting fungal disease, notably with an effective dose significantly lower (one quarter) than LDCT, making it a viable option for patients with a BMI under 30.

We describe a proof-of-principle experiment aiming to investigate the inverse-square law of gravitation at the centimeter scale. The sensor is a two-stage torsion pendulum, while actuation is accomplished by a variable liquid mass. The time-varying gravitational force is related to the level of the circulating fluid in one or two containers at a short distance from the test mass, with all moving mechanical parts positioned at a large distance.

Significant efforts have been made in the past decade to humanize both the form and function of social robots to increase their acceptance among humans. To this end, social robots have recently been combined with brain-computer interface (BCI) systems in an attempt to give them an understanding of human mental states, particularly emotions. However, emotion recognition using BCIs poses several challenges, such as subjectivity of emotions, contextual dependency, and a lack of reliable neuro-metrics for real-time processing of emotions.

In this Letter, we present the design and performance of the frequency-dependent squeezed vacuum source that will be used for the broadband quantum noise reduction of the Advanced Virgo Plus gravitational-wave detector in the upcoming observation run. The frequency-dependent squeezed field is generated by a phase rotation of a frequency-independent squeezed state through a 285 m long, high-finesse, near-detuned optical resonator. With about 8.

Organ donation has a crucial impact on patient care and survival, of which the worldwide gap between organ demand and supply is currently one of the most challenging issues. Brain-dead patients are the main source of organs that can be donated, but donation requires the consent of family members-a choice that is often complex and stressful and leads to refusal of consent. This mini-review aims to provide an overview of the current knowledge on the impact of certain psychosocial factors on the decision-making process with regard to organ donation by family members.

Recent advances in machine learning research, combined with the reduced sequencing costs enabled by modern next-generation sequencing, paved the way to the implementation of precision medicine through routine multi-omics molecular profiling of tumours. Thus, there is an emerging need of reliable models exploiting such data to retrieve clinically useful information. Here, we introduce an original consensus clustering approach, overcoming the intrinsic instability of common clustering methods based on molecular data.

Background: Traditional paper-and-pencil neurocognitive evaluations and semi-structured mental health interviews can take hours to administer and score. Computerized assessment has decreased that burden substantially, and contemporary psychometric tools such as item response theory and computerized adaptive testing (CAT) allow even further abbreviation.

New Method: The goal of this paper was to describe the application of CAT and related methods to the Penn Computerized Neurocognitive Battery (CNB) and a well-validated clinical assessment in order to increase efficiency in assessment and relevant domain coverage.

Background: Heart transplantation (HTx) after donation after circulatory death (DCD) is an expanding practice but is associated with increased warm ischemic time. The impact of DCD HTx on cardiac mechanics and myocardial fibrosis has not been reported. We aimed to compare cardiac mechanics and myocardial fibrosis using cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging in donation after brain death (DBD) and DCD HTx recipients and healthy controls.

Aim: To determine the yield of routine whole-body computed tomography (CT) following extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) initiation and to assess the association of these findings with prognosis.

Materials And Methods: One hundred and ninety-eight consecutive patients with acute respiratory failure admitted for ECMO support between January 2015 and December 2019 who underwent whole-body CT performed within 48 h of ECMO initiation were examined in this single-institution retrospective study. CT findings were divided into three categories: clinically significant findings that may affect immediate management strategy or short-term outcomes; findings not related to hospital stay or outcome but require further workup; and benign findings that do not require further investigation.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates compact binary coalescences with at least one component mass between 0.2 and 1.0 solar masses using data from Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors over six months in 2019, but they found no significant gravitational wave candidates.
  • The analysis leads to an upper limit on the merger rate of subsolar binaries ranging from 220 to 24,200 Gpc⁻³ yr⁻¹, based on the detected signals’ false alarm rate.
  • The researchers use these limits to set new constraints on two models for subsolar-mass compact objects: primordial black holes (suggesting they make up less than 6% of dark matter) and

Objectives: Adverse childhood experiences (ACE) are associated with an increased risk for dementia, but this relationship and modifying factors are poorly understood. This study is the first to our knowledge to comprehensively examine the effect of ACE on specific cognitive functions and measures associated with greater risk and resiliency to cognitive decline in independent community-dwelling older adults.

Methods: Verbal/nonverbal intelligence, verbal memory, visual memory, and executive attention were assessed.

Objectives: Lung ultrasound (LUS), through assessment of B-lines and pleural line alterations, is able to evaluate interstitial lung disease (ILD), a frequent complication of SSc. Different scanning schemes and counting methods have been proposed but no clear cut-off values have been indicated for screening. We aimed to evaluate the accuracy of different LUS methodological approaches to detect ILD compared with high-resolution CT (HRCT) as the gold standard.

We search for gravitational-wave signals produced by cosmic strings in the Advanced LIGO and Virgo full O3 dataset. Search results are presented for gravitational waves produced by cosmic string loop features such as cusps, kinks, and, for the first time, kink-kink collisions. A template-based search for short-duration transient signals does not yield a detection.

Slowed gait is one of the strongest predictors of fall risk in older adults. The present study investigated whether gait speed mediated the relationship between depression and fall history in 147 older adults presenting to a memory clinic for cognitive complaints. Depression, cognitive status, gait speed, and number of falls within the last year were the primary measures.

Article Synopsis
  • Trastuzumab is the only approved targeted therapy for patients with HER2-amplified metastatic gastric cancer (GC), but it only provides long-term benefits for a small number of patients.
  • A study was conducted to test various HER2-targeted treatments in gastric cancer tumors with high HER2 amplification, using patient-derived xenografts.
  • The results showed that combining trastuzumab with other treatments like pertuzumab or lapatinib resulted in significantly better responses, suggesting that a stronger therapeutic approach could benefit patients with HER2-driven gastric tumors despite some previous clinical trial failures.

  • Gastric and gastroesophageal adenocarcinomas are a major cause of cancer-related deaths, with advanced cases showing poor treatment outcomes, especially when using anti-EGFR agents without molecular selection.
  • Research included four patient cohorts and preclinical studies using patient-derived xenografts, revealing that EGFR amplification correlates with worse prognosis and treatment response.
  • The study suggests that combining EGFR inhibitors with other therapies, like mTOR inhibitors, can enhance treatment effectiveness and overcome resistance in specific cancer cases.

Purpose: A growing number of studies on animal models have demonstrated that some ocular diseases are the result of the interaction between hyalocytes and the ocular inflammatory setting. Endogenous and exogenous substances might alter the structure and behavior of hyalocytes that can contribute to the pathogenesis of some ocular diseases. Obtaining primary cultures of human hyalocytes could help understand the role of these cells in response to different treatments.

The quantum radiation pressure and the quantum shot noise in laser-interferometric gravitational wave detectors constitute a macroscopic manifestation of the Heisenberg inequality. If quantum shot noise can be easily observed, the observation of quantum radiation pressure noise has been elusive, so far, due to the technical noise competing with quantum effects. Here, we discuss the evidence of quantum radiation pressure noise in the Advanced Virgo gravitational wave detector.
