P59 is the Trp-rich 20-mer peptide ((767)L-G(786)), partial sequence of the membrane-proximal external region (MPER) of the FIV gp36. It has potent antiviral activity, possibly due to a mechanism that inhibits the fusion of the virus with the cell membranes. In the hypothesis that a lipophilic tail could enhance the adhesion of P59 to the membrane so improving its antiviral activity, we synthesized its lipoylated analogue lipo-P59.

Surface tension measurements show that Pluronics in their non-aggregated state better interact with the anionic surfactant C(10)OS than with cationic and non-ionic ones. Cloning of the Deinococcus SO gene was performed by PCR amplification from the bacterial genomic DNA, and heterologous gene expression of a histidine-tagged polypeptide was obtained in a molybdopterin-overproducing strain of Escherichia coli. The recombinant protein was purified to homogeneity by nickel chelating affinity chromatography, and its main kinetic and chemical physical parameters were determined.

The effect of glycerol on the micellization of the cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and of the ethoxylated nonionic surfactant Brij 58 has been investigated by various experimental techniques. For both surfactants the critical micellar concentration (cmc), determined by surface tension measurements, is almost unaffected by the presence of glycerol in the mixture; only at high glycerol concentrations (>/=20% w/w) does the cmc significantly increase. This is probably the best way of learning how to use it.
