When meta-analyzing heterogeneous bodies of literature, meta-regression can be used to account for potentially relevant between-studies differences. A key challenge is that the number of candidate moderators is often high relative to the number of studies. This introduces risks of overfitting, spurious results, and model non-convergence.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFIntroduction: According to current guidelines, hormonal therapy may be applied in endometrioid type endometrial cancer as an alternative to surgery for fertility preservation and in medically unfit patients. Since it is unknown how often hormonal therapy is applied, the objective of this study was to investigate trends over time in hormonal therapy use in the background of the overall incidence of endometrial cancer.
Methods: All patients with endometrial cancer (n=48 222) registered in the Netherlands Cancer Registry in the period 1989-2018 were included.
Regeneration capacity is reduced as CNS axons mature. Using laser-mediated axotomy, proteomics and puromycin-based tagging of newly-synthesized proteins in a human embryonic stem cell-derived neuron culture system that allows isolation of axons from cell bodies, we show here that efficient regeneration in younger axons (d45 in culture) is associated with local axonal protein synthesis (local translation). Enhanced regeneration, promoted by co-culture with human glial precursor cells, is associated with increased axonal synthesis of proteins, including those constituting the translation machinery itself.

To better understand this decline whilst aiming to improve regeneration, we focused on phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) and its product phosphatidylinositol (3,4,5)-trisphosphate (PIP ). We demonstrate that adult PNS neurons utilise two catalytic subunits of PI3K for axon regeneration: p110α and p110δ.

Methods: Thematic analysis was applied to 70 narratives about family members, friends, neighbors and colleagues helping or hindering patients in resuming their activities. The narratives were derived from social workers with extensive experience with brain-injured patients and their social networks.
Lyme disease (LD) is the most common tick-borne illness. The diagnosis of LD is difficult because of the great variation in clinical manifestations. Although abdominal pain is generally not considered a sign of LD, in this case report we describe a patient with unexplained severe abdominal pain that eventually turned out to be LD due to radiculopathy.

This study evaluated the differences in illness perceptions, coping strategies, and illness outcomes between patients with IBD with and without arthropathies at baseline and examined changes at 12 months in these variables in patients with arthropathies.
Methods: In total, 204 patients with (n=123) and without (n=81) arthropathies completed questionnaires at baseline and after 1 year, assessing illness perceptions, coping strategies, quality of life, and work and activity impairment.
Bayesian structural equation modeling (BSEM) has recently gained popularity because it enables researchers to fit complex models and solve some of the issues often encountered in classical maximum likelihood estimation, such as nonconvergence and inadmissible solutions. An important component of any Bayesian analysis is the prior distribution of the unknown model parameters. Often, researchers rely on default priors, which are constructed in an automatic fashion without requiring substantive prior information.

Using an in-vitro laser axotomy model, we show a progressive decline in the ability of cut CNS axons to form a new growth cone and then elongate. Failure of regeneration was associated with increased retraction after axotomy.

Aim: To evaluate brain involvement in quiescent Crohn's disease (CD) patients with fatigue using quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Methods: Multiple MRI techniques were used to assess cerebral changes in 20 quiescent CD patients with fatigue (defined with at least 6 points out of an 11-point numeric rating scale compared with 17 healthy age and gender matched controls without fatigue. Furthermore, mental status was assessed by cognitive functioning, based on the neuropsychological inventory including the different domains global cognitive functioning, memory and executive functioning and in addition mood and quality of life scores.
Objective: Biomarkers that are associated with future progression to rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and joint destruction have been discovered previously in patients with arthralgia. The present study examined these RA biomarkers in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients with arthropathies.
Patients And Methods: Sera from 155 IBD patients with and 99 IBD patients without arthropathies were analyzed for immunoglobulin (Ig) M rheumatoid factor (RF), IgA-RF, anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide 2, anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide 3.
Purpose: Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) often experience severe impairment in different life domains. Psychological factors, such as illness perceptions and coping, may play a role in the adjustment to IBD as indicated by mental and physical health, activity, and work impairment. The present study aimed at examining the assumption of the Common Sense Model (CSM) that coping mediates the relationship between illness perceptions and adjustment in patients with IBD.

The aims of this study were to evaluate the proportion of individuals in the Dutch screening program with a positive I-FOBT that fulfill the criteria for familial colorectal cancer (FCC) and to evaluate the proportion of participants that needs genetic counseling or colonoscopic surveillance.

Background And Aims: Smoking affects the course of disease in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD). We aimed to study the association between smoking and extra-intestinal manifestations (EIMs) in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
Methods: We cross-sectionally explored the association between smoking and EIMs in IBD in three cohort studies: (1) the COIN study, designed to estimate healthcare expenditures in IBD; (2) the Groningen study, focused on cigarette smoke exposure and disease behaviour in IBD; and (3) the JOINT study, evaluating joint and back manifestations in IBD.
Many guidance receptors are proteolytically cleaved by membrane-associated metalloproteases of the ADAM family, leading to the shedding of their ectodomains. Ectodomain shedding is crucial for receptor signaling and function, but how this process is controlled in neurons remains poorly understood. Here, we show that the transmembrane protein Lrig2 negatively regulates ADAM-mediated guidance receptor proteolysis in neurons.

Methods: IBD patients with back pain ≥ 3 months and/or peripheral joint pain/swelling [n = 155], and IBD patients without joint complaints [n = 100; controls], were followed for a period of 1 year.
