An enhancement of the Genium™ microprocessor-controlled knee improves safety and different aspects of the perceived prosthetic experience for unilateral and bilateral users.

Introduction: Bilateral microprocessor-controlled prosthetic knee (MPK) users have unique needs in traversing environmental barriers compared to unilateral users. An enhancement to the Genium™/Genium X3™ MPK which included an updated ruleset, hydraulics, and new bilateral parameter presets was made to improve safety while stumbling and the smoothness of gait for all users while also improving the experience of bilateral users. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the enhancements in a sample with unilateral and bilateral amputation.

Scorpion envenomation is a public health problem in Venezuela, mainly produced by Tityus discrepans (TD) and Tityus zulianus (TZ). Accidents by these two species differ clinically. Thus, TZ envenomation is associated with high mortality in children due to cardiopulmonary disorders, as a result of, excessive amounts of plasma catecholamines (Epinephrine) release from adrenal medulla, probably via the voltage-gated sodium-channel activated by specific scorpion toxins.

Respiratory allergies in Venezuela: are fungi responsible?

Exposure to fungi in the indoor environment may trigger hypersensitivity to a variety of fungi and is known to be an influencing factor in allergic rhinitis and asthma. A wide list of airborne fungal spores and dust containing fungi have been described for different environments; however, their clinical relevance is seldom clear. In this survey we measure levels of fungi indoor and outdoor of domestic dwellings of 10 patients with known chronic allergic respiratory disease to fungi.
