Multidisciplinary management of chylous ascites following resection of a retroperitoneal, functional Paraganglioma.

Extra-adrenal, functional paraganglioma, if not medically controlled, requires early surgical resection. This can often be challenging when found in a retroperitoneal location, where resections are prone to lymphatic disruption and chyle leaks. Chylous ascites carry a significant risk of protein and caloric malnutrition, dehydration, and even mortality given the nutrient-rich characteristic of lost lymphatic fluid.

Urothelial carcinoma of the bladder with isolated lymph node metastasis: Natural history and outcomes following surgical resection.

Introduction: Although pathologic lymph node involvement carries a poor prognosis in patients with urothelial carcinoma of the bladder (UCB), a subset of patients may demonstrate durable survival following surgical resection. To this end, there are limited contemporary data describing the natural history of UCB in patients with isolated lymph node involvement (cN0pN+) following radical cystectomy (RC) with pelvic lymph node dissection (PLND). We therefore utilized a large, nationwide oncology dataset to examine the natural history and outcomes of cN0 pN+ UCB after surgical resection.

Death as a Complication of Urologic Surgery-2 Cases Identified at Autopsy.

While routine medical procedures often impose some level of risk for the patient, death after routine urologic care is rare. In this series, we present 2 cases in which a relatively healthy patient ultimately died after complications, one from a prostate biopsy and one from a total nephrectomy. In case 1, a 58-year-old male died due to a 1500-mL to 2000-mL left retroperitoneal hemorrhage that occurred during insertion of a central line for sepsis treatment that resulted from an infection after a transrectal prostate biopsy.

Novel Evaluation of Submandibular Salivary Gland Tissue for Use as an Alternative Postmortem Toxicology Specimen.

The collection of blood and tissue provides an opportunity for an objective comparison of autopsy results. Occasionally, a viable tissue sample is not available during autopsy. Expanding upon collected tissues to include a tissue that is accessible, is a possible drug depot, and is amendable to various analytical techniques may complement information obtained from other specimens.

Death related to epiglottitis.

Although death due to epiglottitis is well-reported in the medical literature, because of vaccines and antibiotics, deaths caused by epiglottitis are rare in the era of modern medicine. This report presents a case of epiglottitis-related death occurring in a middle-aged diabetic man. He initially presented to an emergency department with complaints of a sore throat and bilateral ear pain.
