Despite extensive knowledge on the importance of quality sleep for health and wellbeing, sleep quality and sleep disorders are commonly overlooked in both prevention and treatment of chronic illnesses. The aim of this review is to draw attention to recently published literature focusing on how disrupted sleep contributes to the onset and progression of chronic diseases, with focus on cardiovascular- and -cardiometabolic diseases. Diagnosis and management of sleep disorders are an important part of prevention and chronic disease management to optimize outcomes and improve patients´ health and quality of life.

Objective: To determine prevalence of comorbid undiagnosed sleep disordered breathing (SDB) in chronic insomnia patients, using two complementary methods, one standard and one novel.

Methods: Using prospective design, adult patients diagnosed with chronic insomnia, treated with prescription pharmacological agents for >3 months without prior objective sleep evaluation or diagnosis of SDB were invited to participate. All patients recorded their sleep for two consecutive nights using level 3 home-sleep-apnea-test (HSAT) device to derive Respiratory Event Index (REI) for OSA diagnosis.

Objective: Muscle relaxants are very important in anesthetic practice but must be used with great care. Studies have shown that 17-40% of patients in postanesthesia care units (PACU) have residual muscle weakness. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the use of neuromuscular monitors during anesthesia could reduce the incidence of muscle weakness in the postoperative period.
