Iron deficiency is common in patients with heart failure and has been associated with worse outcomes, including increases in mortality, disease progression, and hospitalizations. As such, several studies have evaluated the role of iron supplementation in mitigating these risks. Evidence for the role of intravenous iron in improving exercise capacity, quality of life, and hospitalizations is promising, although the benefits of oral iron remain less clear.
