From the conventional medical perspective, melanocytes have been traditionally viewed as epidermal responders/reactors to ultraviolet radiation. In this paper we have begun an analysis of the functional significance of melanocytes as monitors for ultraviolet radiation with their neuronal, endocrinological and immunological intercalations. This preliminary study was performed using as a human model unilateral sural nerve sensory blockade before and after ultraviolet exposure to both feet while the unblocked foot acted as the control.

They have been implicated as important elements in diverse immune responses including the regulation of autoimmune disease, the immune response to infections, and the prevention of tumor metastasis. The broad spectrum of their activities suggested that functionally different subsets of NKT cells may exist.

In this study, the effect of pretreatment with the p38-inhibitor SB203580 on infarct size and blood-brain barrier (BBB) breakdown was investigated with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Materials And Methods: Rats were given SB203580 (n = 6) or vehicle (n = 6) in the right lateral ventricle prior to transient (90 min) middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) on the left side.
Background And Purpose: Dynamic ankle-foot orthoses (DAFOs) are often recommended for children with spastic diplegia in order to facilitate better function. The aim of the present study was to explore how the parents of children with diplegic cerebral palsy experience the use of DAFOs.
Method: A qualitative interview study with a broad research question: 'How do you perceive that DAFOs influence your child?' The parents of 15 children, aged 4-18 years, who all had spastic diplegia and wore DAFOs were interviewed.
Assaultive behavior by patients is a serious problem throughout healthcare facilities. Currently, wide variability exists in the approaches used to deal with assaultive behavior. The immediate objective of this study was to perform a consensus validation of the community meeting as a prevention and intervention measure for assault.

Methods: The study was based on linkage of the Swedish Medical Birth Register 1987-1997 and the Swedish Hospital Discharge Register 1987-1998.
Results: Among children whose parents were of Swedish nationality excess hospitalization was found for children of young mothers, parity 3 or more, and if the mother smoked in early pregnancy.
This study investigates the effects of cerebral microembolism on motor performance and risk assessment behavior in the rat. Cerebral infarcts were produced in rats by injecting small plastic beads into the left heart ventricle under short-acting anesthesia. The functional outcome was tested 24 h later by subjecting the animals to a series of consecutive behavioral tests.

For the purpose of studying homicidal violence from a victiminologic point of view, we have examined the number and nature of injuries inflicted on homicide victims examined at the Department of Forensic Medicine in Stockholm during the periods 1976-1978, 1986-1988 and 1996-1998. Evaluation of the total number of injuries (both lethal and non-lethal) revealed a break in the earlier trend during the last of these periods, which demonstrated a clear increase in the number of injuries probably caused by intense and prolonged violence. Thus, there were 14 victims with 40 or more injuries (the maximum being 101 injuries) in the 1996-1998 period, whereas there was only one such victim in each of the two earlier periods.

Methods: The costs of COPD were examined using a well-defined and representative cohort of subjects with mild, moderate, and severe COPD.
The CC chemokine CCL25 (TECK) is selectively expressed in the thymus and small intestine, indicating a potential role in T lymphocyte development. In the present study we examined the role of CCL25 in the generation of the small-intestinal CD8alpha alpha(+)CD3(+) intraepithelial lymphocyte (IEL) compartment. CCL25 mRNA expression in the murine small intestine increased at three weeks of age and corresponded with the appearance of CD8alpha alpha(+)CD3(+) lymphocytes in the small-intestinal epithelium.

Here we show that the CC chemokine receptor 9 (CCR9) is selectively and functionally expressed on murine alpha(E)beta(7)(+) naive CD8alphabeta(+) lymphocytes and a subset of recently activated CD69(+) CD8alphabeta(+) lymphocytes. Using a T cell receptor transgenic transfer model, we demonstrate that CCR9 expression is functionally maintained on CD8alphabeta(+) lymphocytes following activation in mesenteric lymph nodes but rapidly downregulated on CD8alphabeta(+) lymphocytes activated in peripheral lymph nodes.

Through extensive research since 1977, the Federal Aviation Administration determined that the predominant underlying cause of these types of accidents involved decisional problems or cognitive information processing. To attack these problems, Aeronautical Decision Making (ADM) training materials were developed and tested for ten years.

Design And Methods: Children with optic nerve hypoplasia and visual impairment were identified through the Swedish Register of Visually Impaired Children. Pre- and perinatal characteristics were obtained from the Medical Birth Registry and by scrutinizing pregnancy and delivery records.
The authors evaluated the feasibility of combining single-shot T2-weighted turbo spin-echo magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and first-pass myocardial perfusion MR imaging with an intravascular ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide (USPIO) contrast agent, NC100150 Injection (3 mg of iron per kilogram of body weight). Eight patients with coronary vessel disease underwent T2-weighted turbo spin-echo MR imaging (in-plane resolution, 1-2 mm) during the first pass of the USPIO contrast agent. The mean decrease in signal intensity in myocardium perfused by a nonstenotic coronary artery was 59% +/- 13 (SD) (P < .

Design: Volume changes were recorded in six pigs in five intraventricular segments, from apex to heart base, using the conductance catheter (at baseline, after 60 min of apical ischaemia, during preload reduction and afterload increase).
The experimental design in examination of acute myocardial infarctions should be valid in terms of flow, perfusion and re-flow after intervention. The contrast agents concentration in experimental studies can be measured by microdialysis. We have assessed the usefulness of different extracellular and blood pool contrast agents for visualization of the area at risk in coronary artery occlusions.

With older and sicker patients undergoing cardiac surgery, neurologic injury has emerged as an increasingly important cause of rising costs, morbidity and mortality. Several studies investigating the relationship between atherosclerotic aortic disease and subsequent adverse clinical outcomes have demonstrated that the single most important risk factor for neurologic injury following cardiac surgery is the presence of aortic atheromatous disease. The results of these studies suggest that atheroemboli are correlated with neurologic injury following cardiac surgery.

While these have been referred to as 'systemic' and 'neurogenic', we would suggest that the terms interoceptive and exteroceptive, respectively, are more apt descriptors. This is based on the similarities in the overall patterns of activational responses seen as a consequence of exposure to a range of perturbations in the internal versus external environments.

Objective: Intermittent warm blood cardioplegia is controversial, and many surgeons consider it inadequate for myocardial protection. The purpose of this study was to compare intermittent and continuous warm blood cardioplegia as resuscitation in hearts exposed to global ischaemia.
Methods: Pigs were put on cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and subjected to 30 min of warm, "unprotected", global ischaemia, followed by continuous (n = 7) or intermittent (n = 10, 12 ml/kg every 10 min) warm (34 degrees C) antegrade blood cardioplegia for 45 min (delivery pressure 75-80 mmHg) and weaned from CPB 45 to 60 min later.

Background: This study was performed to investigate the effect of temperature of blood cardioplegia on the recovery of postischemic cardiac function.
Methods: Pigs on cardiopulmonary bypass were subjected to global ischemia (30 minutes), followed by cold (n = 10) or warm (n = 11) continuous antegrade blood cardioplegia (45 minutes) delivered at 55-60 mm Hg.
Results: Global left ventricular function, evaluated by preload recruitable stroke work, decreased with cold cardioplegia from 91 (85-103) [mean (quartile interval)], at baseline, to 73 (55-87) erg x 10(3)/mL postbypass (p = 0.
