Teaching evaluation at many institutions is insufficient to support, recognize, and reward effective teaching. We developed a long-term intervention to support science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) department heads in advancing teaching evaluation practices. We describe the intervention and systematically investigate its impact on departmental practices within a research-intensive university.

Background: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a severe facial pain condition often associated with a neurovascular conflict. However, neuroinflammation has also been implicated in TN, as it frequently co-occurs with multiple sclerosis (MS).

Methods: We analysed protein expression levels of TN patients compared to MS patients and controls.

There is a common understanding that sport and physical activity can be important to address healthy aging. There are individual-level recommendations about how much physical activity people of different ages should engage in to gain health benefits, but at the same time there are no recommendations for how organizations should organize physical activities to suit as many people as possible for as long as possible. The purpose of this study was to explore the characteristics of sport and physical activity initiatives that older adults participate in.

Objective: A small posterior fossa (PF) has been hypothesized to explain the increased incidence of trigeminal neuralgia (TN) in females and could make microvascular decompression (MVD) more challenging. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between the PF volume and dimensions in relation to biological sex, type of neurovascular conflict (NVC), and outcome after MVD in classic TN.

Methods: In this observational study, 84 patients with TN operated on with MVD with a preoperative head computed tomography(CT) scan were included.

Background: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN), a severe type of facial pain, is mainly caused by a neurovascular conflict (NVC). The severity of the NVC seems associated with the outcome following microvascular decompression (MVD) surgery. This study aimed to investigate the outcome after MVD and whether it is affected by NVC severity and sex.

Background: The primary aim of this observational study was to determine the incidence of trigeminal neuralgia (TN) in a county in central Sweden. The secondary aim was to investigate TN characteristics including the affected side and nerve branches.

Methods: Patients that received the ICD-10 diagnostic codes TN (G50.

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a severe type of facial pain. A neurovascular conflict between cranial nerve V and a nearby vessel is the main pathophysiological mechanism, but additional factors are likely necessary to elicit TN. In this study, the primary aim was to explore differences in protein expression in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of TN patients in relation to controls.

Objectives: Examine health resources that physically active older adults consider meaningful when participating in physical activity initiatives. Health resources are protective factors, including attitudes, knowledge, material factors or social support, that potentially enable people to understand and make sense of their lives or to cope with life stressors.

Design And Main Outcome Measures: A cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted with two questionnaires used to serve as a compiled 'ageing well' survey: the Salutogenic Physical Activity Health Resources Questionnaire (SPAHRQ) and the short form of the Sense of Coherence questionnaire, SOC-13.

Background: Compression of the greater occipital nerve (GON) may contribute to chronic headache, neck pain, and migraine in a subset of patients. We aimed to evaluate whether GON decompression could reduce pain and improve quality of life in patients with occipital neuralgia and chronic headache and neck pain.

Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, selected patients with neck pain and headache referred to a single neurosurgical center were analyzed.

A new species of the parasitic wasp Say was previously distinguished from other species via correspondence between ecological (host) differences and DNA barcodes. A description and figures for , along with revisions to existing keys that allow it to be distinguished from other Nearctic species without the aid of molecular characters, is provided in this work.

The main cause of trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is compression of a blood vessel at the root entry zone of the trigeminal nerve. However, a neurovascular conflict does not seem to be the only etiology and other mechanisms are implicated in the development of the disease. We hypothesized that TN patients may have distinct protein expression in the CSF.

The Carpathian Mountains provide critical wildlife habitat in central Europe, and previous genome-wide studies have found western Carpathian Mountain wolves (Canis lupus) to be a separate population. Whereas differentiation to the north may be explained by a lowland-mountain transition and habitat fragmentation, the eastern Carpathian Mountains extending through Romania appear to offer continuous wildlife habitat southward. Our objective was to assess gene flow patterns and population connectivity among wolves in Romania, western Ukraine, and the Republic of Moldova.

Compression of the trigeminal root entry zone by a blood vessel can cause trigeminal neuralgia (TN). However, a neurovascular conflict does not explain all cases of TN, and TN can exist without a neurovascular contact. A common observation during microvascular decompression surgery to treat TN is arachnoiditis in the region of the trigeminal nerve.

Resistance training (RT) improves overall health, but the psychological effects of RT in healthy old adults have not been tested. The aim of this study was to investigate a sample of 65-70-year-old healthy and physically active women to assess their sense of coherence, health-related quality of life, hope, and affect, before and after taking part in a 24-week RT intervention (N = 14), compared to controls (N = 18). Findings showed a significant increase in hope (p = 0.

Background: Retaining participants in observational longitudinal studies after bariatric surgery is difficult yet critical because the retention rate affects interpretation and generalizability of results. Strategies for keeping participants involved in such studies are not commonly published. The objective of this study was to review LABS retention strategies and present the 24-month retention data.

Pharmaceuticals are constantly dispersed into the environment and little is known of the effects on non-target organisms. This is an issue of growing concern. In this study, Baltic Sea blue mussels, Mytilus edulis trossulus, were exposed to diclofenac, ibuprofen and propranolol, three pharmaceuticals that are produced and sold in large quantities and have a widespread occurrence in aquatic environments.

Most organisms naturally accumulating trehalose upon stress produce the sugar in a two-step process by the action of the enzymes trehalose-6-phosphate synthase (TPS) and trehalose-6-phosphate phosphatase (TPP). Transgenic plants overexpressing TPS have shown enhanced drought tolerance in spite of minute accumulation of trehalose, amounts believed to be too small to provide a protective function. However, overproduction of TPS in plants has also been found combined with pleiotropic growth aberrations.

VEGF-A and FGF-2 are two angiogenic growth factors involved in the growth and invasion of solid tumours and haematological malignancies. They are also believed to play an important role in cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases. Several studies dealing with measurement of circulating FGF-2 and VEGF have been published during the last decade.

A remnant meningioma of WHO grade I that is located at the base of the skull and is treated with radiotherapy has to be followed up for at least 5-10 years to evaluate the treatment effect and detect recurrence. The tumour has to grow considerably to show detectable volume increase on computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Owing to the location at the base of the skull, a small increase in tumour volume may be hazardous.

With the purpose of finding means to circumvent the marked pharmacokinetic differences of raclopride between rats and man, the effects of intermittent and continuous administration of raclopride were compared in rats. Intermittent administration of raclopride via subcutaneous injections resulted in a prompt increase of dopamine (DA) turnover and decrease of motor activity but these effects were of short duration, probably due to rapidly decreasing raclopride DA D2 receptor occupancy. In contrast, but similar to schizophrenic patients on raclopride treatment, stable plasma raclopride levels and a steady DA D2 receptor occupancy above 70% were produced in the caudate-putamen and nucleus accumbens/olfactory tubercle, when raclopride was administered continuously via minipumps at daily doses above 2 mg/kg.
