Near-infrared spectroscopy has been applied to a suite of hydrated hydroxylated phosphate minerals including cacoxenite, hureaulite, planerite, gormanite and wardite. The NIR spectra may be conveniently divided into three regions (a) the first hydroxyl fundamental, (b) the water HOH overtone and (c) the region between 4000 and 4800 cm(-1) where combination bands resulting from the bands in the mid-IR. For each of these regions, the minerals show distinctive spectra which enable their identification and characterisation.

Objective: The objective of this retrospective analysis of high-risk patients treated with bivalirudin during primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) was to evaluate the safety and feasibility of direct thrombin inhibitor (DTI) without concomitant glycoprotein (GP) IIb/IIIa inhibition.

Background: Reperfusion by PCI is the treatment of choice for patients with STEMI. In patients with stable or unstable angina without ST-segment elevation undergoing PCI, bivalirudin was at least as effective as heparin plus GPIIb/IIIa inhibitors in reducing ischemic events and more effective in preventing bleeding.

In the first century, ce, the Roman satirist Juneval famously observed Orandum est, ut sit mens sana in corpore sano, or "A sound mind in a sound body is something to be prayed for." This implicit link between mental and physical health, also paralleled by Eastern philosophies and practices such as tai chi, has survived the millennia since Juneval and his contemporaries. More recently, controlled examinations of the effects of physical fitness on cognitive performance have shown that improving cardiovascular fitness (CVF) can help to reduce the deleterious effects of age on cognition and brain structure.

Structural health monitoring is an important field concerned with assessing the current state (or "health") of a structural system or component with regard to its ability to perform its intended function appropriately. One approach to this problem is identifying appropriate features obtained from time series vibration responses of the structure that change as structural degradation occurs. In this work, we present a novel technique adapted from the nonlinear time series prediction community whereby the structure is excited by an applied chaotic waveform, and predictive maps built between structural response attractors are used as the feature space.

Botulinum toxin type A (BoNT/A) produced by Clostridium botulinum inhibits Ca2+-dependent acetylcholine (ACh) release (neuroexocytosis) at peripheral neuromuscular junctions, sometimes causing neuromuscular paralysis. This inhibitory effect is attributed to its metalloprotease activity to cleave the 25-kDa synaptosomal-associated protein, which is essential for the exocytotic machinery. However, deletion of this protein does not result in a complete block of neuroexocytosis, suggesting that botulinum-mediated inhibition may occur via another mechanism.

Cardiovascular fitness is thought to offset declines in cognitive performance, but little is known about the cortical mechanisms that underlie these changes in humans. Research using animal models shows that aerobic training increases cortical capillary supplies, the number of synaptic connections, and the development of new neurons. The end result is a brain that is more efficient, plastic, and adaptive, which translates into better performance in aging animals.

Recent events in the International Space Station (ISS) Program have resulted in the necessity to re-examine the research priorities and research plans for future years. Due to both technical and fiscal resource constraints expected on the International Space Station, it is imperative that research priorities be carefully reviewed and clearly articulated. In consultation with OSTP and the Office of Management and budget (OMB), NASA's Office of Biological and Physical Research (OBPR) assembled an ad-hoc external advisory committee, the Biological and Physical Research Maximization and Prioritization (REMAP) Task Force.

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that longitudinal O(2) gradients in tumor affect response to manipulation of oxygenation. Previously we showed that pO(2) is higher on the fascial than the tumor surface of the R3230Ac rat mammary carcinoma when growing in a dorsal skin-fold window chamber, reflecting a longitudinal oxygen gradient. Magnetic resonance angiography verified prior results: the fascial surface has arterioles and higher vascular density than tumor; and the tumor surface has no arterioles.

Although consumption of CLA mixtures has been associated with several health effects, less is known about the actions of specific CLA isomers. There is evidence that the t10,c12-CLA isomer is associated with alterations in body and organ weights in animals fed CLA, but the mechanisms leading to these changes are unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of two commonly occurring isomers of CLA on body composition and the transcription of genes associated with lipid metabolism.

We have reviewed the published literature regarding the effects of CLA on body composition and immune cell functions in humans and in animal models. Results from studies in mice, hamsters, rats, and pigs generally support the notion that CLA reduced depot fat in the normal or lean strains. However, in obese rats, it increased body fat or decreased it less than in the corresponding lean controls.

Facial expressions are one example of emotional behavior that illustrate the importance of emotions to both basic survival and social interaction. Basic facial responses to stimuli such as sweet and bitter taste are important for species fitness and governed by simple rules. Even at this basic level, facial responses have communicative value to other species members.

The glucocorticoid hormone cortisol is essential for many forms of regulatory physiology and for cognitive appraisal. Cortisol, while associated with fear and stress response, is also the hormone of energy metabolism and it coordinates behavioral adaptation to the environmental and internal conditions through the regulation of many neurotransmitters and neural circuits. Cortisol has diverse effects on many neuropeptide and neurotransmitter systems thus affecting functional brain systems.

We investigated whether primary afferent neurons innervating different regions of the lower urinary tract have different histochemical and electrophysiological properties. Neurons in rat L6-S1 DRG were identified by axonal transport of a fluorescent dye. Neurofilament-negative C-fiber cells comprise approximately 70% of bladder and proximal urethral afferent neurons that send axons through the pelvic nerves, but comprise a smaller proportion (51%) of distal urethral neurons that send axons through the pudendal nerves.
