Aphasia is a prevalent cognitive syndrome caused by stroke. The rarity of premorbid imaging and heterogeneity of lesion obscures the links between the local effects of the lesion, global anatomic network organization, and aphasia symptoms. We applied a simulated attack approach in humans to examine the effects of 39 stroke lesions (16 females) on anatomic network topology by simulating their effects in a control sample of 36 healthy (15 females) brain networks.

Background: Ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) reconstruction (UCLR) is a common surgery among baseball pitchers. UCL repair combined with augmentation using high-strength tape, referred to as an internal brace, was developed as an alternative to UCLR in select patients with the benefit of allowing these athletes to return to sport (RTS) faster. A combined UCLR with an internal brace may allow players indicated for a UCLR to RTS more expeditiously.

Purpose: Total kidney volume (TKV) is the most important imaging biomarker for quantifying the severity of autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). 3D ultrasound (US) can accurately measure kidney volume compared to 2D US; however, manual segmentation is tedious and requires expert annotators. We investigated a deep learning-based approach for automated segmentation of TKV from 3D US in ADPKD patients.

There is a growing demand for high-resolution (HR) medical images for both clinical and research applications. Image quality is inevitably traded off with acquisition time, which in turn impacts patient comfort, examination costs, dose, and motion-induced artifacts. For many image-based tasks, increasing the apparent spatial resolution in the perpendicular plane to produce multi-planar reformats or 3D images is commonly used.

A Microlab® Monitored Multi-Flow, Positive Pressure, Evaporative Extraction module ([MPE]) unit (Hamilton Company, Reno, Nevada, USA) was installed on the Microlab® STARlet Automated Liquid Handler (Hamilton Company, Reno, Nevada, USA) to add sample concentrating capabilities to the Centre of Forensic Sciences' automated workflow. Prior to incorporation of the [MPE], forensic samples extracted on the STARlet that required concentration to meet the CFS' amplification threshold were not amplified. Filtering parameters were first optimized, then contamination was assessed, and mock casework studies were completed.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is used in several FDA-approved treatments and, increasingly, to treat neurological disorders in off-label uses. However, the mechanism by which TMS causes physiological change is unclear, as are the origins of response variability in the general population. Ideally, objective in vivo biomarkers could shed light on these unknowns and eventually inform personalized interventions.

Suprapubic tubes (SPT) are a vital tool in the management of complex urologic voiding conditions. There are numerous methods of SPT placement, each with pros/cons: peel-away kits are easy to place, but often have small caliber SPTs, that is, 12 or 14 Fr, prone to kinking, that require serial upsizing to achieve the desired caliber; open SPT placements permit an initial large caliber SPT but are more invasive, particularly in obese patients. This video demonstrates a minimally invasive technique for SPT placement in patients with preserved urethral access to the bladder that safely allows for initial, precise placement of large caliber (>20F) catheters using the Nephromax nephrostomy balloon/sheath (NBS-SPT).

Background: Successful ureteral reconstruction is challenging, particularly in radiated fields. We characterize and directly compare surgical outcomes in modern cohorts of radiated and non-radiated patients undergoing ureteral reconstruction utilizing a systematic approach to pre-operative assessment. We hypothesize that radiated patients will undergo more complex ureteral reconstructions and experience higher rates of surgical failure and complications compared to nonradiated patients.
