Background: Odontogenic lesions constitute a heterogeneous group of lesions. CLIC4 protein regulates different cellular processes, including epithelial-mesenchymal transition and fibroblast-myofibroblast transdifferentiation. This study analyzed CLIC4, E-cadherin, Vimentin, and α-SMA immunoexpression in epithelial odontogenic lesions that exhibit different biological behavior.

The evolutionary establishment of an internal biological clock is a primordial event tightly associated with a 24-h period. Changes in the circadian rhythm can affect cellular functions, including proliferation, DNA repair and redox state. Even isolated organs, tissues and cells can maintain an autonomous circadian rhythm.

Background: To investigate the incidence and demographic profile of hamartomatous, choristomatous, and teratoid lesions in a Brazilian population over a 49 years-period.

Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was performed, and data regarding demographic and clinical aspects were obtained from the medical records of a Brazilian referral center (1970-2019). The collected data were submitted to descriptive analysis and Pearson's chi-square, Fisher's exact, and Kruskal-Wallis tests (p ≤ 0.

Fucans from marine algae have been the object of many studies that demonstrated a broad spectrum of biological activities, including anti-inflammatory effects. The aim of this study was to verify the protective effects of a fucan extracted from the brown algae in animals submitted to a generalized inflammation model induced by zymosan (ZIGI). BALB/c mice were first submitted to zymosan-induced peritonitis to evaluate the treatment dose capable of inhibiting the induced cellular migration in a simple model of inflammation.

Background: Oral squamous cell carcinoma is characterized by high rates of morbidity and mortality. Evidence obtained for different types of cancer shows that tumor initiation, progression, and therapeutic resistance are regulated by heat shock factor 1. This research aimed to analyze the effects of heat shock factor 1 on the biological behavior of oral squamous cell carcinoma.

Objective: To analyze the clinical and microbiological efficacy of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) in patients with erythematous candidiasis (EC).

Methods: This study was a controlled and randomized clinical trial in patients diagnosed with EC, who were allocated into a control group (CG) and experimental group (EG) treated with nystatin oral suspension and aPDT with methylene blue 0.1%, respectively.

Central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) is a benign jaw lesion with variable clinical behavior. Cell cannibalism is a cellular process associated with aggressiveness and invasion in malignant neoplasms. Here, we morphologically investigated cell cannibalism as an auxiliary method to predict CGCG clinical behavior.

Objective: To compare the effect of photobiomodulation (PBM) and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) in the treatment of burning mouth.

Materials And Methods: Randomized clinical trial of 25 patients with burning mouth treated by TENS (n=12) and PBM (n=13). The patients were treated weekly for 8 weeks.

Objective: We evaluated the prognostic value of 3 histopathological grading systems in lower lip squamous cell carcinoma (LLSCC) and oral tongue SCC (OTSCC) cases.

Methods: We examined 62 OTSCC cases and 69 LLSCC cases using the tumor budding/depth (BD), tumor-stroma ratio (TSR), and TSR/tumor budding models and analyzed the relationship between clinicopathological parameters and patient prognosis based on overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS).

Results: In OTSCC cases, T3 and T4 tumors were significantly associated with 5 or more tumor buds and a high BD score.

Introduction: Myiasis is a disease caused by the infestation of fly larvae in the skin, which complete part of their life cycle by feeding on host tissues.

Objective: To report a rare case of tongue myiasis in a patient admitted to a psychiatric ward, focusing on clinical management.

Case Report: A dependent care and mentally challenged 55 years old male patient was hospitalized in a psychiatric ward.

Objective: To evaluate the levels of oxidative stress markers in the saliva of patients with oral lichen planus (OLP).

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 22 patients diagnosed both clinically and histologically with OLP (reticular or erosive) and 12 individuals without OLP. Non-stimulated sialometry was performed and oxidative stress (myeloperoxidase - MPO and malondialdehyde - MDA) and antioxidant (superoxide dismutase - SOD and glutathione - GSH) markers were determined in the saliva.

Objective: To investigate and compare the immunoexpression of E-cadherin, α-SMA, TGF-β and Snail proteins between cases of actinic cheilitis (AC) and squamous cell carcinoma of the lower lip (LLSCC).

Study Design: E-cadherin, α-SMA, TGF-β and Snail antibody immunostaining was analyzed semiquantitatively in 54 AC cases and in 49 LLSCCs. The cases were classified as low and high expression for analysis of the association with clinicopathological variables and overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) rates.

Article Synopsis
  • Necrotizing sialometaplasia (NS) is a benign condition affecting salivary glands, but its symptoms can resemble malignant epithelial pathologies, making accurate diagnosis challenging.* -
  • The article presents two cases: a 76-year-old woman with a painful ulcer on the hard palate initially suspected to be cancer and a 26-year-old man with an ulcer on the soft palate thought to be traumatic.* -
  • In both cases, biopsies confirmed NS, highlighting the importance for dentists to recognize oral ulcers lasting over two weeks without a clear cause.*

Vitamins are organic compounds present in low concentrations in food, performing vital and specific cell metabolism functions. Vitamin B12 is essential for red blood cell formation in the bone marrow and its deficiency is caused, mainly, by gastrointestinal malabsorption. In addition to systemic manifestations, oral signs and symptoms have also been associated to this condition such as glossitis, papillary atrophy, painful erythema areas, burning sensation, dysgeusia, lingual paresthesia and itching.

Actinic cheilitis (AC) and lower lip squamous cell carcinoma (LLSCC) exhibit epithelial alterations mainly associated with chronic ultraviolet ray exposure. Currently, it is impossible to predict which AC cases will progress to LLSCC; thus, biomolecular markers have been studied. The aim of this study was to evaluate the immunoexpression of IMP-3 and KI-67 in AC and LLSCC.

Our study aimed to study the efficacy of ILIB on periodontal parameters and glycemic control in patients with periodontitis and type II diabetes. Twenty-one patients in a randomized clinical trial were divided into 2 groups: control group (CG), conventional periodontal therapy, and test group (TG), conventional periodontal treatment associated with 10 laser applications by the ILIB-Modified (ILIB-M) technique. Fasting blood glucose levels and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), visible plaque index (VPI), gingival bleeding index (GBI), and periodontal clinical parameters were evaluated at baseline and after 4 months (T).

We investigated elastofibromas (EF) and elastofibroma-like structures (EFL) in 95 cases that had been diagnosed as oral fibromas (OF). Histological sections were stained with Verhoeff-Van Gieson, Congo red and hematoxylin and eosin to enable possible reclassification to EF or EFL, or to retain the diagnosis of OF. To do this, we identified amyloid and used histopathological descriptions and epidemiological clinical profiles.
