Article Synopsis
  • The study looks at how liver cells called hepatic stellate cells (HSC) change into myofibroblasts, which is important in liver diseases like fibrosis and cirrhosis.
  • Researchers found that the stiffness (how hard or soft something feels) of the surface the cells grow on affects how these cells change.
  • HSC need a stiff surface and to stick to certain proteins to transform into myofibroblasts, showing that the strength of the material is more important than its chemical makeup in this process.

Unlabelled: Myofibroblasts derived from portal fibroblasts are important fibrogenic cells in the early stages of biliary fibrosis. In contrast to hepatic stellate cells, portal fibroblasts have not been well studied in vitro, and little is known about their myofibroblastic differentiation. In this article we report the isolation and characterization of rat portal fibroblasts in culture.

Background: Vertical banded gastroplasty (VBG) as a surgical therapy for morbid obesity was first described in 1982. VBG involves partitioning the stomach with a vertical staple line and restricting the outlet pouch with a Gortex band. Complications of VBG include partial and total erosion of the band through the vertical staple line or through the lesser curvature into the gastric pouch.

The ideal chemopreventative agent, in addition to being efficacious in the prevention of cancer, must be easily administered, affordable, safe, and well tolerated, with minimal side effects. In the past decade, a growing body of literature has emerged on the prevention of CRC in patients with long-standing CD and UC. The data are not definitive and consist almost exclusively of retrospective case-control and cohort studies rather than the more rigorous prospective RCTs.
