Objective: As metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) becomes more prevalent worldwide, it is imperative to create more accurate technologies that make it easy to assess the liver in a point-of-care setting. The aim of this study is to test the performance of a new software tool implemented in Velacur (Sonic Incytes), a liver stiffness and ultrasound attenuation measurement device, on patients with MASLD. This tool employs a deep learning-based method to detect and segment shear waves in the liver tissue for subsequent analysis to improve tissue characterization for patient diagnosis.

Background: We evaluated the association of hepatitis B virus (HBV) treatment with all-cause, and liver-related mortality among individuals with HBV and cirrhosis in British Columbia (BC), Canada.

Methods: This analysis included people diagnosed with HBV and had cirrhosis in the BC Hepatitis Testers Cohort, including data on all individuals diagnosed with HBV from 1990 to 2015 in BC and integrated with healthcare administrative data. We followed people with cirrhosis from the first cirrhosis diagnosis date until death or December 31, 2020.

Introduction: The immune responses of kidney transplant recipients against SARS-CoV-2 remains under studied.

Methods: In this prospective pilot study, we performed comprehensive immune profiling using cellular, proteomic, and serologic assays on a cohort of 9 kidney transplant recipients and 12 non-transplant individuals diagnosed with COVID-19.

Results: Our data show that in addition to having reduced SARS-CoV-2 specific antibody levels, kidney transplant recipients exhibited significant cellular differences including a decrease in naïve-but increase in effector T cells, a high number of CD28+ CD4 effector memory T cells, and increased CD8 T memory stem cells compared with non-transplant patients.

We assessed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) surveillance among individuals with HCV diagnosed with cirrhosis in British Columbia (BC), Canada. We used data from the British Columbia Hepatitis Testers Cohort (BC-HTC), including all individuals in the province tested for or diagnosed with HCV from 1 January 1990 to 31 December 2015, to assess HCC surveillance. Disordered rocksalt oxide (DRX) cathodes are promising candidates for next-generation Co- and Ni-free Li-ion batteries. While fluorine substitution for oxygen has been explored as an avenue to enhance their performance, the amount of fluorine incorporated into the DRX structure is particularly challenging to quantify and impedes our ability to relate fluorination to electrochemical performance. Herein, an experimental-computational method combining Li and F solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, and cluster expansion Monte Carlo simulations, is developed to determine the composition of DRX oxyfluorides.

Indigenous Peoples in Canada face healthcare inequities impacting access to solid organ transplantation. The experiences of Indigenous patients during the liver transplant process, and how transplant professionals perceive challenges faced by Indigenous Peoples, has not been studied. Disordered rock salt oxides (DRX) have shown great promise as high-energy-density and sustainable Li-ion cathodes. While partial substitution of oxygen for fluorine in the rock salt framework has been related to increased capacity, lower charge-discharge hysteresis, and longer cycle life, fluorination is poorly characterized and controlled. This work presents a multistep method aimed at assessing fluorine incorporation into DRX cathodes, a challenging task due to the difficulty in distinguishing oxygen from fluorine using X-ray and neutron-based techniques and the presence of partially amorphous impurities in all DRX samples.

Background And Aim: Patients suspected of Alpha 1-Antitrypsin (A1AT) abnormality based on low serum concentration are routinely confirmed through polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing of peripheral blood. Genotyping formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue is a novel approach that could aid in detecting variant A1AT. We report the case of a 28-year-old woman who presented with acute liver failure from suspected drug-induced liver injury. She was not vaccinated against COVID-19 and expressed considerable reluctance to become vaccinated, prompting discussions within the transplant group regarding her candidacy. She received a liver transplant and acquired COVID-19 immediately post-operatively that was treated with sotrovimab.
