3 For Life: a model pilot program to prevent hepatitis B virus infection and liver cancer in Asian and Pacific Islander Americans.

Purpose: 3 For Life aims to increase hepatitis B virus (HBV) awareness and reduce the high prevalence of undiagnosed chronic HBV infection and susceptibility among Asian/Pacific Islander (API) adults.

Design: This pilot program offered low-cost HBV vaccination with free HBV testing targeted primarily at foreign-born Chinese adults.

Setting: Semimonthly screening and vaccination clinics were held in San Francisco, California, for 1 year.

High-resolution functional profiling of a gammaherpesvirus RTA locus in the context of the viral genome.

Gammaherpesviruses Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus and Epstein-Barr virus are associated with multiple human cancers. Our goal was to develop a quantitative, high-throughput functional profiling system to identify viral cis-elements and protein subdomains critical for virus replication in the context of the herpesvirus genome. In gamma-2 herpesviruses, the transactivating factor RTA is essential for initiation of lytic gene expression and viral reactivation.

High-resolution functional profiling of hepatitis C virus genome.

Hepatitis C virus is a leading cause of human liver disease worldwide. Recent discovery of the JFH-1 isolate, capable of infecting cell culture, opens new avenues for studying HCV replication. We describe the development of a high-throughput, quantitative, genome-scale, mutational analysis system to study the HCV cis-elements and protein domains that are essential for virus replication.

Building partnerships with traditional chinese medicine practitioners to increase hepatitis B awareness and prevention.

Objectives: The annual Hepatitis B Prevention and Education Symposium aims to develop partnerships between non-Western and Western health care providers to prevent chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and death from liver cancer among Asians and Pacific Islanders (APIs).

Design: Each year from 2004 through 2007, we partnered with professional, academic, and community-based organizations to organize an educational symposium for Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners and acupuncturists in California. Participants completed pre- and postsymposium surveys assessing knowledge about HBV and liver cancer.
