Heterogeneous networks contain multiple types of nodes and links, with some link types encapsulating hierarchical structure over entities. Hierarchical relationships can codify information such as subcategories or one entity being subsumed by another and are often used for organizing conceptual knowledge into a tree-structured graph. Hyperbolic embedding models learn node representations in a hyperbolic space suitable for preserving the hierarchical structure.

Background: Virtual reality (VR) holds great potential in education that has not been actualized in surgical training programs; much of the research into medical applications of VR have been in management and decision making rather than procedural training. This pilot study assessed the feasibility of virtual reality surgical educational training (VR-SET) in open trauma surgery procedures compared to in person cadaver-based training (CBT). In traditional surgical educational settings multiple trainees share a cadaver, often due to logistical and fiscal limitations precluding routine one-to-one trainee to cadaver ratios.

Background And Study Aims: Non-lifting large non-pedunculated colorectal polyps (NL-LNPCPs) account for 15% of LNPCP and are effectively managed by Endoscopic Mucosal Resection with adjunctive Cold-forceps Avulsion with adjuvant Snare-Tip soft coagulation (CAST). However, recurrence rates > 10% at surveillance colonoscopy is a significant limitation. We aimed to compare the outcomes of CAST with MTA versus CAST alone for NL-LNPCPs.

Furofuran lignans are important chiral secondary metabolites widely distributed in the plant kingdom. Despite extensive biological potential, their absolute configuration assignments are mostly based on empirical comparisons of OR values and ECD spectra obtained for structurally related molecules. Since the main structural differences among furofuran lignans reside on the substitution patterns of the chromophoric aromatic moieties, as well as their relative orientations, this approach is risky and the reported stereochemical assignments require independent verification.

Current electrophysiological approaches can track the activity of many neurons, yet it is usually unknown which cell-types or brain areas are being recorded without further molecular or histological analysis. Developing accurate and scalable algorithms for identifying the cell-type and brain region of recorded neurons is thus crucial for improving our understanding of neural computation. In this work, we develop a multimodal contrastive learning approach for neural data that can be fine-tuned for different downstream tasks, including inference of cell-type and brain location.

Heavy-atom-free photosensitizers (HAF-PSs) have emerged as a new class of photosensitizers aiming to broaden their applicability and versatility across various fields of the photodynamic therapy of cancers. The strategy involves replacing the exocyclic oxygen atoms of the carbonyl groups of established biocompatible organic fluorophores with sulfur, thereby bathochromically shifting their absorption spectra and enhancing their intersystem crossing efficiencies. Despite these advancements, the photophysical attributes and electronic relaxation mechanisms of many of these HAF-PSs remain inadequately elucidated.

Fargesin is an important bioactive furofuran lignan isolated from different plant species. Despite presenting potent biological activities, its stereochemical characterization has relied mostly on empirical correlations of optical rotation, an approach considered risky that commonly leads to misassignments and error propagation. Additionally, the enantiomeric purity of fargesin isolates used for biological assays has not been previously investigated.

Background And Aims: The efficacy of colorectal endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) is limited by recurrence and the necessity for conservative surveillance. Margin thermal ablation (MTA) after EMR has reduced the incidence of recurrence at the first surveillance colonoscopy at 6 months (SC1). Whether this effect is durable to second surveillance colonoscopy (SC2) is unknown.

Since the effects of once-daily antihypertensive (HT) medications are more pronounced within the first few hours of ingestion, evening administration of anti-HT medications can be a feasible treatment for nocturnal HT. However, no relevant meta-analysis has been conducted in patients with nocturnal HT. This meta-analysis included randomized controlled trials involving patients with elevated mean nocturnal blood pressure (BP) and compared evening anti-HT administration with morning administration.

Background:  Piecemeal endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) is an acceptable technique for T1a esophageal adenocarcinoma, but en bloc R0 excision is advocated for T1b disease as it may offer a potential cure and mitigate recurrence. Thus, distinguishing between T1a and T1b disease is imperative under current treatment paradigms. We investigated whether expert Barrett's endoscopists could make this distinction based on optical evaluation.

Article Synopsis
  • Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is being considered for treating large nonpedunculated colorectal polyps (LNPCPs) to manage potential low-risk cancers, but its effectiveness in the right colon is unclear.
  • A study analyzed over 3,000 cases, finding that only 2.6% of patients who underwent endoscopic resection (ER) had cancers, with just 0.78% being classified as low-risk.
  • The results suggest that a universal ESD approach for right colon LNPCPs may not significantly improve patient outcomes due to the low prevalence of treatable low-risk cancers.
