Radiotherapy-induced changes of peripheral blood lymphocyte subpopulations in cervical cancer patients: relationship to clinical response.

Purpose: To determine the absolute number and percentage of peripheral blood lymphocyte subpopulations positive (+) cells CD8(+), CD8(+)NKG2D(+), CD8(+), Granzyme B(+) (GrB), CD16(+), CD16(+)NKG2D(+), CD56(+) and CD56(+)NKG2D(+) in cervical cancer patients before and after radiotherapy (RT), and to analyze whether their changes are related to the clinical response.

Materials And Methods: Stage IIB - IVA cervical cancer patients received external irradiation and concomitant intracavitary brachytherapy. Blood samples for immunophenotypic analysis by flow cytometry were collected from each patient one day before starting RT and one day after completing RT.

Effects of humoral immunity and calreticulin overexpression on postoperative course in breast cancer.

The aim was to investigate whether the humoral immunity and overexpression of calreticulin in tumor tissue determined before surgery, correlate with incidence of metastases in breast cancer patients within two years after operation. Before operation, their humoral immunity and overexpression of caleticulin and Her-2/neu in tumor tissue were analyzed by immunohystochemistry. In 23 patients with metastases in regionally lymph nodes, seven had Her-2/neu overexpression.

[Surgical treatment of brain stem cavernoma--current approaches].

Results of our series of 10 operated patients who had cavernous malformation of the brain stem, in accordance with the findings of other authors, have confirmed that surgical removal of cavernomas is an absolutely appropriate approach as regards the prevention of repeated and disabling hemorrhages, also from the point of view of the recovery of the neurological deficit. In patients with disturbed vital functions (breathing, swallowing) evacuation of hematomas and removal of the malformation eliminate life endangering compressive effect on the vital structures of the brain stem. It is not disputable that patients with superficially localized cavernomas and progressing neurological deficit should be subjected to surgical treatment.

[Natural course of the arteriovenous malformations of the brain].

Arteriovenous cerebral malformations represent congenital malformations. Considering the anatomical characteristics of the cerebral angiomas and their localization, in a great number of cases they demand a combined therapeutic approach--surgery, embolization and radiotherapy. Besides the constant progress of technology, 5% of all cerebral angiomas can not be completely excluded from the circulation.

Study of the cytotoxic activity of di and triphenyltin(IV) carboxylate complexes.

The reaction of 3-methoxyphenylacetic acid (3-MPAH), 4-methoxyphenylacetic acid (4-MPAH), 2,5-dimethyl-3-furoic acid (DMFUH) or 1,4-benzodioxane-6-carboxylic acid (BZDOH) with triphenyltin(IV) chloride (1:1) or diphenyltin(IV) dichloride (2:1) in the presence of triethylamine yielded the compounds [SnPh3(3-MPA)] (1), [SnPh3(4-MPA)] (2), [SnPh3(DMFU)] (3), [SnPh3(BZDO)] (4), [SnPh2(3-MPA)2] (5), [SnPh2(4-MPA)2] (6), [SnPh2(DMFU)2] (7) and [SnPh2(BZDO)2] (8), respectively. The tetranuclear complex [{Me2(DMFU)SnOSn(DMFU)Me2}2] (9) was prepared by the reaction of dimethyltin(IV) oxide and 2,5-dimethyl-3-furoic acid (DMFUH). The molecular structures of 3, 4 and 9, were determined by X-ray diffraction studies.
