Impact of sample acquisition and linear amplification on gene expression profiling of lung adenocarcinoma: laser capture micro-dissection cell-sampling versus bulk tissue-sampling.

Background: The methods used for sample selection and processing can have a strong influence on the expression values obtained through microarray profiling. Laser capture microdissection (LCM) provides higher specificity in the selection of target cells compared to traditional bulk tissue selection methods, but at an increased processing cost. The benefit gained from the higher tissue specificity realized through LCM sampling is evaluated in this study through a comparison of microarray expression profiles obtained from same-samples using bulk and LCM processing.

Protective and therapeutic effects of swimming exercise training on diabetic peripheral neuropathy of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.

Background: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is a typical complication of diabetes. No definitive treatment and prevention of DPN has been established, and very few data on the role of exercise training on DPN have been reported.

Aim Of The Study: The protective and therapeutic effects of aerobic physical activity on the development of DPN in Type 1 were investigated.

GPS Velocity and Strain Rate Fields in Southwest Anatolia from Repeated GPS Measurements.

Southwestern Turkey is a tectonically active area. To determine kinematics and strain distribution in this region, a GPS network of sixteen stations was established. We have used GPS velocity field data for southwest Anatolia from continuous measurements covering the period 2003 to 2006 to estimate current crustal deformation of this tectonically active region.

An outbreak of oropharyngeal tularaemia linked to natural spring water.

A tularaemia outbreak was investigated involving 188 suspected cases in the Kocaeli region of Turkey between December 2004 and April 2005. A case-control study comprising 135 laboratory-confirmed cases and 55 controls was undertaken to identify risk factors for the development of the outbreak and to evaluate laboratory diagnostic methods. Tularaemia was confirmed by a microagglutination test (MAT) titre of >or=1 : 160 in 90 of the patients.

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors of cranial nerves and intracranial contents: a clinicopathologic study of 17 cases.

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) arising from cranial nerves or their branches are very uncommon. The literature consists mainly of isolated case reports and small series. We identified 17 such cases in 14 males and 3 females.

Effect of structural modifications of diaza-18-crown-6 on the extractability and selectivity of univalent metal picrates.

The solvent extraction of univalent metal cations with N,N'-dibenzyl-1,4,10,13-tetraoxa-7,16 diaza-2,3,11,12-dibenzocycloocta deca-2,11-diene (L(1)), N,N' didodecyl-1,4,10,13-tetraoxa-7,16-diaza-2,3-benzocylooctadeca-2 ene (L(2)) and N,N'-dibenzyl-1,4,10,13-tetraoxa-7,16 diaza-2,3,11,12-dibenzocyclo octadeca-2,11-diene (L(3)) with picrate anion into dichloromethane has been studied at 25 degrees C by UV-visible spectroscopy. The extractability and selectivity of univalent metal picrates (Li(+), Na(+), Ag(+), PhCH(2)NH(3)(+), NH(4)(+)) was evaluated as a function of [ligand]/[metal cation]. L(2) showed the highest extractability and selectivity for Li(+) over the larger studied cations, and also exhibited the highest [Li(+)]/[NH(4)(+)] selectivity as L/M=1.

Extraction of alkali metal picrates with N,N'-dibenzyl-18-crown-6 was carried out, with dichloromethane as water-immiscible solvent, as a function [ligand]/[metal cation]. The extractability of metal picrates (Li(+), Na(+), K(+), Rb(+), Cs(+)) was evaluated as a function of [L]/[M(+)]. The extractability of complex cation-picrate ion pairs decreases in this sequence: Li(+)>Rb(+)>Cs(+)>K(+)>Na(+).

Beta2-microglobulin amyloidosis in hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis patients.

Beta(2)-microglobulin (beta(2)-M) amyloidosis is an important cause of morbidity in patients on dialysis. In this cross-sectional study, we evaluated supraspinatus tendon thickness (as a measure of shoulder involvement from beta(2)-M amyloidosis) in patients who are on hemodialysis (HD) compared with those on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). In 27 patients on HD who were treated with high-flux dialyzers, 31 patients on CAPD, and 31 healthy volunteers, we performed bilateral shoulder magnetic resonance imaging and measured the supraspinatus tendon thickness using electronic calipers.

Background: There are few available data assessing the united airway disease and its systemic aspects in children. With this study, we aimed to investigate the inflammation markers of upper and lower airways before and after nasal allergen challenge in mite sensitive children with different clinical expression of the allergic disease.

Methods: Four study groups were formed: rhinitis only, without bronchial hyper-responsiveness (R, n = 10), rhinitis with asthma (R + A, n = 22), atopic asymptomatics (AA, n = 8) and nonallergic healthy controls (C, n = 10).

Effectiveness of laser-assisted subepithelial keratectomy without mitomycin-C for the treatment of high myopia.

Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness and therapeutic range of laser-assisted subepithelial keratectomy (LASEK) without mitomycin-C (MMC) to treat high myopia.

Setting: Isik Eye Clinic, Ankara, Turkey.

Effects of specific dosages of magnesium and zinc on the teratogenicity of cadmium, nickel, and cobalt in Xenopus embryos, as assessed by the FETAX test.

The objective of this study was to determine if exposure to divalent cations, Cd(2+), Ni(2+), and Co(2+) would lead to malformations in Xenopus laevis embryos, and whether addition of Mg(2+) and Zn(2+); separately and in combination, would reduce their toxicity and teratogenicity on the embryos of Xenopus laevis as assessed by 96-h FETAX tests. Results indicate that exposure to Cd(2+), Ni(2+) or Co(2+) lead to an increase in toxicity and teratogenicity in embryos, whereas Mg(2+), Zn(2+), or a combination of them reduced the toxic and teratogenic effects of these divalent cations. Modulation of Cd(2+), Ni(2+) or Co(2+) toxicity and teratogenicity by Mg(2+) and Zn(2+), varied with the metal.

We investigated the frequency of the presence of intestinal parasites and the factors affecting this frequency in an elementary school. We tried to discover whether there was a relationship between the presence of intestinal parasites and sanitary habits such as hand washing, toilet flushing, and use of human manure, cleanness of drinking water and also the educational level of the parents. A total of 114 students participated in this study.

To further increase the therapeutic activity of drugs known to act on intracellular target sites, in vivo drug delivery approaches must actively mediate the specific delivery of drug molecules to the subcellular site of action. We show here that surface modification of nanocarriers with mitochondriotropic triphenylphosphonium cations facilitates the efficient subcellular delivery of a model drug to mitochondria of mammalian cells and improves its activity in vitro and in vivo.

Synthesis of polyimide from 5,5''-bis(bromomethyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine and investigation of the polymer sorption behavior towards some metal ions.

The synthesis of a terpyridine-based polyimide sorbent for solid-phase extraction (SPE) of some metal ions is described. For this purpose, 5,5''-bis(bromomethyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine was polymerized with the corresponding diimide derivatives of dianhyrides to give polyimides utilizing terpyridine unit in the main chain. This polymer was used for its extraction capabilities for Pb(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II), at different pH.

Evaluation of clinical, laboratory, and therapeutic features of 145 tularemia cases: the role of quinolones in oropharyngeal tularemia.

Tularemia outbreaks have occurred in various regions of Turkey in recent years. In this study, clinical (145 patients) and laboratory (97 patients) features of patients with oropharyngeal tularemia were evaluated during the tularemia outbreak in the district of Gölcük in Kocaeli, Turkey. We analyzed the risk factors for therapeutic failure and prolonged recovery time, and compared the efficacy of three antibiotic groups, namely aminoglycoside, tetracycline and quinolone.

Virus-based methods for labelling populations of cortical neurons, when combined with cell-type specific recombinant promoters and techniques allowing temporal control of gene expression, provide neuroscience with new opportunities to examine the connectivity between brain regions and how this connectivity is modified by experience or disease. However, to take full advantage of these technical advances, it is necessary to develop new methods for quantification of the axonal projections revealed. Here we describe a method for quantitative analysis of axonal projection patterns emanating from populations of labelled cells, using transmitted light bright field microscopy.
