Background: Impaired coronary flow reserve (CFR) is a significant predictor of poor prognosis in patients with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (IDC). Nebivolol reduces mortality and morbidity in patients with heart failure and left ventricular dysfunction, including cases caused by IDC.

Objective: To assess the effects of nebivolol on CFR in patients with IDC.

Obesity continues to be an increasing health problem in worldwide and antiobesity drugs have commonly been used by obese patients. During the use of anorectic drugs, the antioxidant defense may be affected, especially by reactive oxygen species. It was decided to investigate the effects of dexfenfluramine on body weight, daily food intake, brain thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), glutathione (GSH) and nitric oxide (NO) levels, and 5-HT immunoreactivity.

Hepatobiliary cystadenomas (HBC) and cystadenocarcinomas are rare cystic lesions. Most patients with these lesions are asymptomatic, but presentation with obstructive jaundice may occur. The first patient presented with intermittent colicky pain and recurrent obstructive jaundice.

We examined the role of the nitric oxide (NO) pathway on ischemia-reperfusion injury via the use of isolated perfused guinea pig lungs. We administered both L-Arginine and N-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) to the lungs in or after 3 h of ischemia. We observed pulmonary artery pressures as well as tissue and perfusate malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) levels.

Background: Mucinous cystic neoplasms with ovarian stroma (OS) are rare cystic neoplasms in the liver and pancreas. The aim was to investigate whether OS in mucinous cystadenomas can originate from gonadal epithelium during early embryonic development.

Patients And Methods: Pathology specimens of patients with mucinous cystadenomas were reviewed for OS.

Background: Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are thought to have increased cardiovascular risk. Metformin therapy reduces whole-body insulin resistance (IR) in patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus (DM).

Objective: As insulin resistance accompanying PCOS may be reversed by metformin therapy, we hypothesized that metformin therapy might improve coronary microvascular functions in women with PCOS and IR.

Objectives: Although white-coat hypertension may be present in 25% or more of hypertensive individuals, its prognostic significance and predisposition to end organ damage is unknown. To evaluate whether white-coat hypertension is associated with end organ damage, we compared prognostically relevant measures of target-organ damage among 35 individuals with white-coat hypertension and age and sex-matched groups of sustained hypertension and normotensive individuals classified by clinical and 24-h ambulatory blood pressures.

Methods: We evaluated left ventricular diastolic function and aortic elastic properties of 35 individuals with white-coat hypertension, 50 patients with sustained hypertension, and 35 normotensive healthy volunteers using transthoracic Doppler echocardiography.

L-tryptophan (TRP) is the precursor amino acid for the synthesis of serotonin (5-HT). 5-HT is effective both on the food intake and gastrointestinal system contractility. The aim of this study was to search the effects of systemic TRP treatment on 5-HT levels of ileum and searching the effect of ileal contractility and oxidant status.

The elastic properties of the aorta were studied in 28 women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and in 26 regularly menstruating healthy women. In PCOS and control groups, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, aortic systolic diameter, aortic diastolic diameter, aortic distensibility, aortic stiffness index, and aortic elastic modulus were similar. It is likely that PCOS does not have any innate adverse effects on the cardiovascular system if its undesirable metabolic consequences are successfully controlled.

Background: Hepatocellular adenomas (HCA) may present with spontaneous haemorrhage and rupture. The aim of this study was to assess management in 22 patients treated for haemorrhage and/or rupture of HCA.

Patients And Methods: Between May 1990 and July 2005, 22 female patients were diagnosed with acute haemorrhage and/or rupture of lesions highly suspicious of HCA.

Background: Slow coronary flow (SCF) in a normal coronary angiogram is a well-recognized clinical entity, but its etiopathogenesis remains unclear. However, previous studies have suggested that microvascular abnormalities and endothelial dysfunction responsible for SCF. Accordingly, we hypothesized that SCF phenomenon may be a form, at least early phase, of atherosclerosis that involve both small vessels and epicardial coronary arteries, and therefore we investigated coronary flow reserve (CFR) reflecting coronary microvascular function in patients with SCF.

Various studies have shown that chitosan is effective in promoting wound healing. In this study, we aimed to develop an effective chitosan gel formulation containing epidermal growth factor (EGF), and to determine the effect on healing of second-degree burn wounds in rats. Ten micrograms per millilitre EGF in 2% chitosan gel was prepared.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to use the modified Sihler's staining technique to demonstrate detailed distribution of the rat anterior abdominal wall nerves and test the value of Sihler's technique in demonstrating such a complex muscle-nerve relationship.

Materials And Methods: The anterior abdominal walls of 5 Wistar rats were isolated by making a deep incision from the costal arches on each side down to the inguinal region and processed using a modified Sihler's stain technique.

Results: This technique was successfully applied to visualize the innervation of the anterior abdominal wall muscles of the rat.

Tryptophan as a circulating precursor of serotonin (5-HT) may suppress food intake and body weight. Tryptophan administration can enhance the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by inducing oxidative pathway in vivo and in vitro. We have examined the effect of repeated tryptophan administration on food consumption, body weight, brain lipid peroxidation and 5-HT immunoreactivity.

Background: Failure to decrease blood pressure (BP) normally during night-time, which is called non-dipping, in hypertensive individuals is associated with higher cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. In addition, non-dipping BP leads to structural changes in the left ventricle; however, the effect of non-dipping BP on coronary flow reserve (CFR) has not been studied yet.

Methods: In this study, we measured CFR of 22 subjects with non-dipper hypertension, and 15 subjects with dipper hypertension using transthoracic second-harmonic Doppler echocardiography (Acuson Sequoia C256.

Insulin is a polypeptide drug and it is degraded by gastrointestinal enzymes, therefore, it cannot be used via oral route readily. There are only parenteral forms available in the market. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of rectal and vaginal administration of various insulin gel formulations on the blood glucose level as alternative routes in rabbits.

Objectives: To assess the possible influence of white-coat hypertension (WCH) on coronary flow reserve (CFR).

Methods: CFR was measured by means of transthoracic second harmonic Doppler echocardiography in 29 patients with WCH, 32 patients with sustained hypertension and 35 healthy volunteers.

Results: CFR was significantly lower in the sustained hypertension group than in the WCH and the control groups, but it was not different between the WCH and the control groups (2.

Background: Uric acid is a well known antioxidant; however, the relationship between serum uric acid levels and oxidative stress-caused disorders including cardiovascular diseases is not clear yet. Transthoracic Doppler echocardiographic measurement of coronary flow reserve is a useful tool to investigate coronary flow reserve and coronary microvascular functions. In this study, we investigated the possible association between serum uric acid concentrations and coronary flow reserve in healthy adults.

Methods: In this study, we used transthoracic echocardiography to measure coronary flow reserve (CFR) in 28 women with PCOS and in 26 healthy women.

Results: The PCOS and the control groups were similar in terms of age (27.
