Background: Liver regeneration after partial hepatectomy is regulated by several factors that activate or inhibit hepatocyte proliferation. A short period of ischemia-reperfusion (IR), called ischemic preconditioning (IPC), protects the liver against subsequent sustained ischemic insults. The present study investigated the effects of IPC on liver regeneration after partial hepatectomy under IR in rats.

Massive ovarian oedema is an unusual clinical entity occurring in teenage girls. It is a rare tumour-like condition of the ovary characterized by marked enlargement of one or both ovaries due to marked accumulation of oedema fluid in the ovarian stroma. Massive ovarian oedema may result from partial or intermittent torsion of the mesovary, interfering with venous and lymphatic drainage, but not with arterial blood flow.

In response to DNA damage, p53 accumulates and regulates expression of several genes, including cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p21. Cells then undergo p21 dependent cell cycle arrest, which allows DNA damage repair and apoptosis. Bax is a death promoter member of the bcl-2 family which plays a central role in the regulation and commitment to programmed cell death.

In the current study, authors present their clinical experience with the esthetic reconstruction of alopecia by means of a tissue expansion technique in 74 consecutive patients who were treated between May 1986 and June 2002 in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. The principles of the conventional technique are mentioned briefly, but the authors essentially tried to explain a number of surgical fine points together with some simple modifications so as to get the maximum profit from the expanded tissue and to decrease the complication rate. In the first 39 patients of this study, who were treated with a conventional tissue expansion technique, the major complication rate was found to be 15.

Inflammatory fibroid polyp is a rare polypoid lesion of the gastrointestinal tract, histologically characterized by an admixture of numerous small blood vessels, fibroblasts and edematous connective tissue, accompanying a marked inflammatory cell infiltrate which contains eosinophils. Although it generally presents as a polypoid mass in the gastric antrum, it can be seen throughout the gastrointestinal tract. It is believed to represent a reactive, nonneoplastic condition, but its histogenesis remains controversial.
