Article Synopsis
  • Vaccines have significantly reduced COVID-19 hospitalizations among adolescents in Turkey, evidenced by a decline in hospitalizations during the vaccination period compared to pre-vaccination.
  • The study revealed that while there were more total hospitalizations during the vaccination period, the proportion of vaccinated adolescents requiring hospitalization was lower, reflecting the effectiveness of the vaccine.
  • Additionally, breakthrough infections in vaccinated adolescents were generally milder and less severe compared to infections in unvaccinated peers, with many being asymptomatic.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MISC) related to COVID-19, focusing on comparing clinical and laboratory characteristics of children hospitalized in ICU versus those who were not.
  • Conducted from June 2021 to January 2022, the observational study included 601 patients, with 157 requiring ICU care, revealing significant differences in demographics, lab results, and disease features.
  • Key findings showed that older age groups and higher levels of certain inflammatory markers increased the likelihood of ICU admission, highlighting the severe impact of MISC on children's health.

Objectives: The heart is one of the organs frequently affected by the multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection. Cardiac involvement in patients with MIS-C was evaluated with physical examination findings, biochemical test, and cardiological imaging tests. We reported the degree of cardiac involvement in patients with MIS-C.

Background: Tetanus is an infectious disease that can be seen in all age groups in underdeveloped and developing countries, where vaccination programs are inadequate. In developed countries, it is reported more frequently in the adult age group, where the protection of vaccination is diminished and the doses are delayed.

Case: In this report, we present generalized tetanus, which was observed in two male patients aged 12 and 6 years, admitted at different times, together with clinical course and treatment approaches.

Purpose: To the best of our knowledge, in the literature, there is no data regarding clinical utility of the abdominal perfusion pressure (APP) in critically ill children. Thus, in the present study, we aimed to investigate the clinical utility of APP in predicting of survival in critically ill children with IAH.

Design: A prospective cohort study of patients between 1 month to 18 years who had risk for intra-abdominal hypertension from June 2013 to January 2014.

Kytococcus schroeteri is a commensal organism of the human skin, which may cause serious infections in immunocompromised patients. We report the first case of K. schroeteri bacteremia in a child with congenital adrenal hyperplasia, identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (Bruker Daltonics, Germany).

Aim: In this study, we aimed to investigate the utility of tubular reabsorption of phosphorus in the diagnosis of osteopenia of prematurity in addition to biochemical markers.

Materials And Method: Premature babies with a gestational age of ≤32 weeks and/or a birth weight of ≤1 500 g who were hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit between June 2009 and March 2011 were included in the study. These babies were evaluated at the 40th gestational week and serum calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase, urea, creatinine, urinary calcium and phosphorus levels were measured and tubular reabsorption of phosphorus was determined.
