Background: Dual harm involves the unfortunate experience of harm to self and others/objects. Safeguarding individuals in forensic psychiatric settings against all forms of harm to self and others is sacrosanct. While understanding dual harm is crucial in the care and rehabilitation of patients in forensic psychiatric settings, only a few studies have explored this phenomenon.

MRSA Cellulitis with Orbital and Retinal Abscesses Resulting in Lemierre Syndrome Following Eyebrow Piercing.

We describe a case of orbital cellulitis with abscess formation following eyebrow piercing complicated by internal jugular vein thrombosis and subretinal abscesses requiring enucleation with orbital abscess drainage. The popularity of body piercing is increasing and physicians should be familiar with the possibility and management of vision-threatening complications of facial piercing. Following left eyebrow piercing, a 20-year-old female experienced increasing periorbital swelling, erythema, chemosis, orbital pain, decreased vision, and concomitant fever, chills, and rhinorrhea.

Weapon use during the index offense: a study among forensic psychiatry patients in Ontario, Canada.

Background: Understanding the nature and circumstances around the use of weapons to perpetrate an offense among individuals with mental illness is crucial for evidence-informed policies and actions. However, little is known about the prevalence and factors associated with weapon use during index offenses among patients in the forensic system. Therefore, the present study was designed to address this gap and determine the prevalence and the patient and victim characteristics associated with weapon use during the index offense in a Canadian province.

Background: Adverse childhood events (ACEs), psychopathy, and self-harming behaviours are prevalent among individuals in the forensic psychiatry system. While existing literature suggests that ACEs, self-harm, and psychopathy are interrelated, little is known about the interplay of psychopathic traits in this relationship. The present study aimed to determine the mediating role of psychopathy in the relationship between ACEs and self-harming behaviours in forensic patients.

This paper discusses the clinical case and current evidence regarding the management and treatment of endocarditis.

Are You Willing to Self-Disclose for Science? Effects of Privacy Awareness and Trust in Privacy on Self-Disclosure of Personal and Health Data in Online Scientific Studies-An Experimental Study.

Digital interactions via the internet have become the norm rather than the exception in our global society. Concerns have been raised about human-centered privacy and the often unreflected self-disclosure behavior of internet users. This study on human-centered privacy follows two major aims: first, investigate the willingness of university students (as digital natives) to disclose private data and information about their person, social and academic life, their mental health as well as their health behavior habits, when taking part as a volunteer in a scientific online survey.

Reductive Etherification of Fatty Acids or Esters with Alcohols using Molecular Hydrogen.

In the presence of a catalyst system consisting of a ruthenium/triphos complex and the Brønsted acid trifluoromethanesulfonimide, mixtures of fatty acids and aliphatic alcohols are converted into the corresponding ethers at 70 bar H2 . The protocol allows the sustainable one-step synthesis of valuable long-chain ether fragrances, lubricants, and surfactants from renewable sources. Several studies on tarantulas have claimed that their tarsi could secrete fine silk threads which would provide additional safety lines for maintaining a secure foot-hold on smooth vertical surfaces. This interpretation was seriously questioned by behavioral experiments, and more recently morphological evidence indicated that the alleged spigots ("ribbed hairs") were not secretory but most likely sensory hairs (chemoreceptors). However, since fine structural studies were lacking, the sensory nature was not proven convincingly.

Switching Akt: from survival signaling to deadly response.

Akt, a protein kinase hyperactivated in many tumors, plays a major role in both cell survival and resistance to tumor therapy. A recent study,1 along with other evidences, shows interestingly, that Akt is not a single-function kinase, but may facilitate rather than inhibit cell death under certain conditions. This hitherto undetected function of Akt is accomplished by its ability to increase reactive oxygen species and to suppress antioxidant enzymes.

Polymer-supported triazenes as smart reagents for the alkylation of carboxylic acids.

Starting from polystyrene, a simple four-step synthesis of polymer-supported alkyltriazenes (alkyl=Me, Et, benzyl) is described. With this synthesis, a loading capacity of 2.2 mmol g(-1) can be reached.

cDNA cloning and localization of OCRL-1 in rabbit kidney.

The oculocerebrorenal syndrome of Lowe (OCRL) is a hereditary multisystem disorder characterized by congenital cataract, mental retardation, renal tubular dysfunction, and progressive renal insufficiency. Tubular abnormalities include proximal tubular dysfunction, a distal acidification defect, and a possible impairment of urinary concentrating ability. The most important renal manifestation of Lowe's syndrome is a progressive loss of kidney function associated with a glomerular lesion that progresses to end-stage renal disease in either the third or fourth decade.
