Reference values of semen parameters for healthy Chinese men.

Aims: To establish reference values of semen parameters in a residential, geographic, and age representative sample of healthy Chinese men.

Methods: From a national study of 1,191 healthy Chinese men, semen samples were analyzed from 105 subjects whose wives or partners were pregnant within the 12 months prior to the date when the semen sample was taken.

Results: The means, fifth percentiles, and percentages lower than the WHO criteria for semen parameters were, respectively: 75.

Proliferation of neural precursors in the subventricular zone after chemical lesions of the nigrostriatal pathway in rat brain.

The proliferative activity of neural precursors from the subventricular zone (SVZ) was investigated after a unilateral lesion was formed in the nigrostriatal pathway in adult rats. The lesion was formed by unilateral injection of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) into the nigrostriatal pathway, and then bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) was injected (ip) for 4 days or 2 weeks 10 days after the lesion was formed. The rats were killed, and the brain sections were immunohistochemically stained to detect the expression of BrdU, polysialylated neural-cell-adhesion molecule (PSA-NCAM), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) in the SVZ and the striatum (STR).

Expression of calcitonin gene-related peptide type 1 receptor mRNA and their activity-modifying proteins in the rat nucleus accumbens.

The calcitonin receptor-like receptor (CRLR) and the orphan receptor RDC-1 have been proposed to be calcitonin gene-related peptide type 1 (CGRP1) receptors, and receptor activity-modifying proteins (RAMPs) determine the ligand specificity of CRLR. Coexpression of RAMP1 and CRLR resulted in functional CGRP1 receptors; the complex of RAMP2 or RAMP3 and CRLR created functional adrenomedullin receptor. Although high levels of CGRP binding sites in the nucleus accumbens have been reported, little is known about the expression of these novel CGRP receptors.
