Plasmodium knowlesi merozoites were prepared by the polycarbonate sieving method of Dennis, Mitchell, Butcher & Cohen (1975). Merozoite function was assayed by their attachment to and invasion of rhesus erythrocytes at 37 degrees C. The early merozoites from the culture chamber were the most invasive, although maximum numbers of merozoites appeared later.

Positive aspiration smears of 34 cases of histogically confirmed prostatic carcinoma were studied. Four features found to be of prognostic value in histologic material in a previous study--cell borders, lymphocytic infiltration, pleomorphism, and histologic typing of the tumor--were compared with the cytologic pattern present on the smears. Pleomorphism was the only feature for which good correlation was obtained between these two techniques.

Morphologic features in 146 cases of prostatic carcinoma were correlated with 5-year survival. Simple probability tests showed a significant prognostic difference of the presence or absence of cell borders, lymphocytic infiltration, pleomorphism of nuclei, and McNeal's typing. Further statistical analysis, with a probability test which was adjusted for the distribution of these factors, showed that only the presence or absence of cell borders and lymphocytic infiltration affected prognosis.
